Nurse Leader Definition

Thank you TONL Members. Information you have provided related to the definition of Nurse Leader is changing the literature on leadership in nursing. As an action item stemming from the 20/21 Strategic Plan, the TONL Board appointed a task team, comprised of volunteers, to create a definition for “Nurse Leader.” As well, the team was asked to create a plan for disseminating the name change from TONE to TONL.  The work of the task team began in the Fall of 2020. The task team began by reviewing feedback received from TONL members in response to a yearly TONL Member Survey.

From that work, TONL is pleased to announce the adoption of a Nurse Leader Definition which will be used to guide TONL in all aspects of operations.

Background

The Texas Organization of Nurse Executives (TONE) transitioned to the Texas Organization for Nursing Leadership (TONL) in 2020. The intent of the transition was to be more inclusive of nurse leaders from novice to expert. Defining nurse leader fosters the alignment of TONL mission, goals, education, and member benefits. The future of TONL relies on the continuation and advancement of nurse leader competencies, and this depends upon first clarifying the definition of a nurse leader. On February 18, 2021, the TONL Board of Directors accepted the work done by the TONL Taskforce for Defining Nurse Leader.

Definition

“When you say ‘nurse,’ leader is clearly implied. As the face of healthcare, nurses are trusted professionals who provide impassioned care in diverse practice settings. Nurses lead with integrity, compassion, and humility. They are grounded in empathetic action and a commitment to human dignity. Using evidence and critical thinking, they inspire and create innovations that improve the health of patients and communities. As full healthcare partners, working with and through others, they advocate for a global culture of wellness. Nurses are courageous leaders –not because they’re fearless – but because they rise to every healthcare challenge.”
