Dallas, Texas was the venue for one of the best Texas Organization of Nurse Executives Annual Conference’s to date. The Education Committee, under the direction of the chairperson Dr. Caryn Iverson, assembled an outstanding group of speakers, sponsors and poster presenters. In addition to the outstanding sharing of knowledge, best practice and expertise, there were numerous opportunities to network with nurse leaders from throughout the state of Texas.
The opening session was presented by LeAnn Thieman, renowned author of the "Chicken Soup" series. LeAnn’s first job, at the age of 20, found her working with an "old" nurse (she had to be 50!) who lovingly called her BRAT. LeAnn, in turn, called her POSTEN, short for Poor Old Sick and Tired Elderly Nurse! In this fun, entertaining, highly educational session, we all learnt traits of the four generations of nurses and identify ways you and others can relate to, cope with, and even appreciate the differences. By doing so, nurses will decrease blame and resentment in the workplace and will improve cooperation, productivity, retention, and ultimately, patient care.
Rear Admiral (RADM) Trent-Adams serves at the current Deputy Surgeon General and has prior experience as the Chief Nursing Officer for the US Public Health Service. RADM’s career highlights include advocating for improved healthcare access to the underserved and marginalized domestic and global populations. RADM Trent-Adams also advocates for nursing as a healthcare leader and the belief that now is the time for nursing to be at the table and drive changes in healthcare policy.
Participants at this year’s TONE Conference held on February 24 experienced the first TONE Talks session! Based on the well-received TED Talks, presenters were asked to share with conference participants their research and best practice. Mary Lou Wilson presented her project on how nurse caring behaviors can impact patient satisfaction and outcomes. Sharon Mathai shared how nurse physician rounding can improve both communication and collaboration of multidisciplinary teams. Shannon Stone demonstrated how an in-house development program known as EVOLVE improved nurse leader satisfaction scores and engagement.

Dr. Bob Dent quickly and effectively engaged the audience with entreating stories of how he and his 3 brothers all became nurses and why he has such passion for the profession. He described “invisible architecture” as having the most power in building up or taking down organizations. The culture of ownership is key to any organization being known as the best place to work. He discussed “Ownership culture” as very different from holding staff accountable. Ownership denotes self-pride whereas holding employees accountable is actually demotivating by taking away ownership from the employee. Ownership culture has many key components: commitment to mission and values, engagement, passion, initiative (described as “proceed until apprehended”) stewardship, belonging, fellowship, and pride. Dr. Dent stressed how pride, connection, and trust must exist in a culture of ownership. He explained how Toxic Emotional Negativity (TEN) must not be tolerated. He ended his delightful presentation by explaining ownership culture is accomplished with small steps, using the acronym “TBSSSNDQ” -- Think Big Start Small Start Now Don’t Quit.

DNP and PhD level nurse leaders were active participants in a panel discussion related to the two terminal degrees for nurses. The panel was facilitated by Dr. Paula Webb, DNP, RN, NEA-BC (President, TONE and Associate Professor Texas Tech Health Sciences Center) and consisted of: • Dr. Eryn Beard, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, CCNE – Associate Professor Baylor University School of Nursing • Dr. Donna Jackson-Arbuthnot, DNP, RN – Staff Nurse San Antonio Military Medical Center • Lauren Olvera, DNP(c), RN, RNC-OB, SNM – Baylor University School of Nursing • Dr. Stephanie Woods, PhD, RN – Associate Dean Texas Woman’s University Dallas
Ms. Lauren Inouye, Director of Government Affairs, AACN, described the political landscape of the 115th Congress. At this point, the future of ACA is unclear and a more favorable opinion is to repair or improve upon the current bill. The speaker also indicated this project will be up to the Republicans to lead as the Democrats do not have much of a megaphone regarding this issue as many of them are up for re-election in the near future. Speaker Ryan recently released a brief calling for a bill to: · Place a cap on tax exclusion for employer-sponsored health insurance · Roll back Medicaid expansion · Repeal the individual mandate and the premium subsidies · Utilize state innovation grants to enhance Health Savings accounts.
