WHAT'S GOING ON
The Texas Asphalt Pavement Association is actively seeking applicants for the position of Director of Technical Services. TXAPA is a full service trade association for the asphalt pavement industry in Texas that was founded in 1944 and formally registered in 1962. For more than 50 years, TXAPA has been dedicated to quality with a commitment to work in the partnering spirit to promote, enhance and grow the asphalt paving industry in Texas.

In response to inquiries concerning asphalt pavement specifications for low volume roadways, TXAPA has developed a proposed specification for city, county and private development projects. In conjunction with Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI), TXAPA developed a specification that is currently being reviewed by industry partners.

NAPA has been awarded a five-year, up to $2.5 million cooperative agreement by the FHWA for the Advancement of Innovative Asphalt Technology. It is the largest federal contract ever awarded to NAPA. Under the agreement, NAPA will work with FHWA to develop and distribute technical publications and multimedia tools, as well as create, plan, and deliver conferences, seminars, webinars, presentations and conduct surveys for benchmarking.

The 2014 TXAPA Annual Membership Meeting is scheduled for January 6, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Town Lake Hotel in Austin, Texas. The Annual Membership Meeting is a one day event that begins with committee meetings.

The 2014 TXAPA Mid-Year Meeting has been scheduled for June 16-18, 2014 at The Greenbrier Hotel and Resort in West Virginia. This is the first time that TXAPA has headed east for a meeting and we have had some wonderful comments on the venue. Incoming TXAPA President Jeff Greene would like to invite everyone to attend this great meeting.

Exposing engineering students to the engineering, environmental and economic benefits of asphalt pavements is an important element of TXAPA's industry enhancement programs. Recently TXAPA staff hosted 27 engineering students from the University of Texas at Austin at the association office and Hot Mix Asphalt Center. The engineering students were also treated to a plant tour hosted by Ramming Paving/Industrial Asphalt and Aggregates.

2013 has been a very busy year for the HMAC, with demand for certification classes at an all-time high. Since May, the HMAC has added 31 new classes to meet the needs for hot mix asphalt and soils and base technician certification. Recently members of the TCEL in Houston invited TXAPA staff to discuss the certification program and opportunities for more certification classes
