TXAPA is hosting the third annual Asphalt Road-eo Student Engineering Competition Dec 6-7, 2019 at our campus in Buda, Texas, just a few miles south of Austin, Texas. Along with the Road-eo, TXAPA is hosting a career fair exclusively for its members. Recruiters will have access to more than 50 students interested in learning about career options. It’s a great opportunity to introduce the asphalt pavement industry and the many opportunities available to talented young adults looking for internships or entry-level positions after college.

Proper compaction is the single most critical variable in placing quality asphalt pavement with an extended pavement life. In cold weather, proper compaction requires the perfect balance of temperature and time. Above all else, the temperature of hot mix asphalt (HMA) during the rolling operation determines the success of the compaction operation. The time available for compaction (TAC) defines the total amount of time that roller operators must compact the mix before it becomes too stiff to compact. The primary factors influencing TAC are lift thickness, base temperature, mix delivery temperature, ambient air temperature, and wind speed.

In the construction industry, 45% of employers reported they have experienced safety incidents as a result of fatigue. A direct line can be drawn from this statistic to the fact that 46% of construction workers say they typically work at night or early in the morning, which are high-risk hours for feeling tired and/or unalert. Although paving during these hours is often a necessity in our industry, it’s important for employers to have a fatigue risk management system in place to combat the inevitable risks that come along with it.
