Specialization in Asphalt Sustainability Implementation Series: Opportunities: Design, Construction and Maintenance of Porous Pavements

Date: Thursday, May 19, 2:00–3:30 p.m. EDT

Speakers:  Tom Baird, P.E., CPESC, Associate, Barton & Loguidice, D.P.C; Heather Dylla, Director of Sustainability, NAPA; Kent Hansen Director of Engineering, NAPA

Description:

Porous asphalt pavements are a multi-functional, low impact development (LID) technology. Not only do they provide pavements for parking and roads, they are designed to manage and treat stormwater runoff. With proper design and installation, porous asphalt pavements can provide a cost-effective solution for stormwater management in an environmentally friendly way. Other major benefits of porous asphalt pavements include: reduced noise; increased wet weather friction and visibility; and reduced stormwater temperatures before discharge. Attendees will learn when to use porous pavements to maximize their benefits, be given guidance on mix design and proper construction techniques, and be provided lessons learned from a Lake George, New York case study.

 This session will discuss:

  • What options porous pavement provides to meet projects’ stormwater management and cool pavement goals.
  • How to construction and maintain porous asphalt pavements.
  • How to design and specify porous asphalt pavements.

The risk of not understanding them often means playing catch-up in an emergency while trying to balance your organization’s many other priorities.

 Key Takeaways:

  • Identify ways to establish and understand your audiences;
  • Learn how to apply these lessons within your organization.
