The commercial paver must employ good paving practices, but the site-specific needs and limitations of a commercial site can make the challenge of sculpting a pavement to meet the customer’s needs and expectations especially difficult. Smart Business is Sustainable Business Series: Sustainability in the FAST Act

Date: Wednesday, April 27, 2:00–3:00 p.m. EDT

Speakers: Jay Hansen – Executive Vice President, NAPA; Ashley Jackson – Manager of Government Affairs Programs, NAPA; Heather Dylla – Director of Sustainable Engineering, NAPA

On Dec. 4, 2015, the President signed into law the first multi-year highway bill with increased funding since 2005. The Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act of 2015 authorizes funds for Federal-aid highways and highway safety programs. The five-year, $305 billion legislation provides the transportation construction industry the needed certainty to plan for long-term projects. While the new law is pavement neutral, there are "sustainability" provisions in the FAST Act that influence what type of projects get built that will impact the asphalt pavement market.

Key Takeaways:

  • How LEED and other green-ratings systems will be used to influence pavement-type selection;
  • How the current Administration plans to rapidly deploy innovative technologies that address environmental sustainability; and
  • NAPA’s proactive plan to address these issues to meet the needs of the asphalt pavement industry.
