EPA Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Documents Benefits of RAS, RAP and Warm Mix Asphalt

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has conducted a LCA of the environmental benefits of recycled asphalt shingles (RAS). Two years in the making, the EPA LCA measures the carbon footprint of RAS, along with reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and warm mix asphalt (WMA), in terms of greenhouse gas reduction.

For example, the EPA report finds that adding RAS to a 20 percent RAP mixture can reduce an asphalt pavement’s carbon footprint by 21 to 29 percent, depending upon the percentage of RAS used.
