SHRM Advocacy Team Needs Your Help!

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Thanks to all of you who were able to participate in last week’s Advocacy/Legislative webinar. As promised, we are providing you a link to the recorded webinar and a list of action items from the webinar. We ask that you forward this information to all your chapter legislative directors.

We are still looking for some individuals who want and can make a difference in our profession in their state (see 3rd bullet point below) by being an Advocacy Captain.

Want more details on what that would entail? Contact Meredith Nethercutt at Meredith.nethercutt@shrm.org.

Recent Advocacy Captain Vacancies (by state):

ACTION ITEMS the Legislative Directors/state councils can take to further strengthen our efforts at the state and chapter levels:

  • Start making state council/chapter arrangements to sign onto two SHRM letter opportunities:
    1. Key SHRM sign-on letter opportunity for ALL SHRM state councils and chapters: overtime regulation (anticipated mid-June/early July)
    2. SHRM supports H.R. 2050 and H.R. 879: sign-on letter from SHRM chapters and state councils (June)
    3. State partners are encouraged to connect any SHRM members with specific interest and experience with the overtime rules with SHRM to be included on a list of members to contact as the need for information arises (email Ateam@shrm.org)
  • Participate in SHRM’s two federal legislative calls to action; distribute the calls to action to state/chapter networks:
    1. Urge the House of Representatives to Repeal the Excise Tax: http://advocacy.shrm.org/app/write-a-letter?2&engagementId=103313
    2. Ask Congress to Preserve Employer-Provided Wellness Programs: http://advocacy.shrm.org/app/write-a-letter?5&engagementId=86613
  • Distribute A-Team materials at any upcoming state or chapter events. Contact SHRM’s Meredith Nethercutt directly at Meredith.Nethercutt@shrm.org for any specific, helpful content they can use to further promote and recruit for the A-Team (ex. A-Team brochures, SHRM A-Team/Advocacy App PowerPoint slides, sample newsletter articles about the importance of advocacy, promotional language to recruit for Advocacy Captains, links they can post on their website, etc.).

  • Continue to forward any emails/calls to action from Ateam@shrm.org (as distributed by SHRM) to their chapter contacts and within their member networks.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Meredith Nethercutt, SHRM’s Senior Associate for Member Advocacy, at Meredith.nethercutt@shrm.org or 1-703-535-6417.
