The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) released a report in August of 2018 titled, "Performance and Life-Cycle Cost Benefits of Stone Matrix Asphalt" by Fan Yin and Randy C. West. The research report quantifies and compares the performance and life-cycle cost benefits of SMA versus those of polymer-modified Superpave dense-graded mixtures used on similar trafficked highways. The results obtained from this study provide highway agencies with additional guidance regarding the use of SMA as a premium asphalt mixture (Yin and West, 2018).
