On Tuesday, June 25, 2019, asphalt industry professionals had the opportunity to learn all about Stone Matrix Asphalt at the SCAPA SMA Training. Speaker/Trainer Don Watson taught attendees all about SMA mix design procedure, VCA testing, mix production, placement, compaction, quality control and troubleshooting of Stone Matrix Asphalt. The classroom training portion was held in the morning at the CR Jackson Training Facility.

The second half of the day was the laboratory portion of the training, which was held at Blythe Construction. Attendees learned how to make SMA Mix and looked at constructability and common practices using an SMA mix.

It was a full, beneficial and productive training for the 34 asphalt professionals who attended the training.

"Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) is a tough, stable, rut-resistant mixture that relies on stone-on-stone contact to provide strength and a rich mortar binder to provide durability. These objectives are usually achieved with a gap-graded aggregate coupled with fiber or polymer modified, and high asphalt content matrix.” - National Asphalt Pavement Association Quality Improvement Series 122
