Smooth Sailing in St. George

The following excerpt is reprinted from St. George Mayor Anne Johnston's editorial in the August 30th edition of the Dorchester Eagle-Record:

"[...] On the day SCDOT completed the resurfacing of Memorial Boulevard, I drove into St. George coming from Branchville. Suddenly I was floating! Not a bump, not a seam – just four miles of smooth black satin ribbon. Inside my car, not a sound. When I reached Academy Road, I turned around and rode the entire stretch headed west. "Smooth ride" took on new meaning. I rolled down the windows and sailed along with the wind in my face. Suddenly, I was in front of Judge Frazier’s house once again! What a joy! Thank you, SCDOT! I know we pay taxes – gasoline, sales, property, state and federal. We pay for our own roads.

Still our stretch of highway was chosen. That is a gift and we should be as happy as a six-year-old with new skates. We now have a smooth, clean, safe stretch of highway all the way through our Town. What a joy! As I rode through the second time, I saw the Town through the eyes of a stranger riding along Memorial Boulevard. "What a nice clean town this is! If the highway is this well-kept, the entire Town must be just as attractive. I would love to take a tour, if I weren’t in such a hurry! Next time I pass this way, I shall certainly take time to ride around!" I can easily understand someone thinking those thoughts when traveling through our home on our new road. [...]"
