Coming Soon: SCAPA Asphalt Pavement Design Guide Phase II

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

In early 2014, the South Carolina Asphalt Pavement Association released the Asphalt Pavement Design Guide for Low Volume Roads and Parking Lots. The book served as a guide when designing new pavements for these applications: it helps the designer select the appropriate materials and pavement thickness based off of the traffic and soil conditions. SCAPA traveled all over the state in 2014 and 2015 hosting seminars for engineers, consultants, public works officials, landscape architects and contractors.

The highly anticipated next phase for the Pavement Design Guide is the release of Section 2: Asphalt Overlays for Preservation and Rehabilitation of Low-Volume Roads and Parking Lots, or 'Overlay Design Guide' in short. This section provides guidance on evaluating existing asphalt pavements, and a Distress Identification Guide has been added as well. Once the designer knows the purpose for the overlay (preservation or structural), they can design an adequate thickness with the appropriate materials. Additionally, the overlay design guide also describes best practices for construction of asphalt overlays. SCAPA is fortunate again to have Dr. Brad Putman of Clemson University's Glenn Department of Civil Engineering on the project. SCAPA's Education & Training Committee helped Dr. Putman develop the framework, and has provided feedback and oversight on the project. The Overlay Design Guide is another example of SCAPA's educational efforts and dedication to the association's motto, "Together We Know More."

The Overlay Design Guide will be presented on at the 2016 South Carolina Engineering Conference and 2016 South Carolina American Public Works Association Conference in front of many engineers and public works officials this summer. This fall SCAPA will be hosting seminars on this new release. Be on the lookout for seminar flyers soon!
