Governor Haley Signs Road Funding Bill?: A critical first-step in long-term funding for critical needs

Columbia, SC - After a two-year battle, Governor Nikki Haley gave final approval by signing S.1258, the road funding bond bill, into law. The bill allows the use $212 million in redirected existing fees and other revenue to bond up to $2.2 billion in one-time funding through the State Infrastructure Bank. The bonded money will be prioritized on a needs-based methodology by SCDOT over ten years for long-term highway projects and bridge replacement.? ?

The SC Alliance to Fix Our Roads Executive Director, Bill Ross, has issued the following statement in response to the passage of S.1258:?

?"On behalf of the SC Alliance to Fix our Roads, we would like to commend the Governor’s actions on approving a road funding and DOT reform plan to begin to address our crumbling roads and bridges. The additional funding adds much-needed capacity to expand roads and relieve congestion, which is vital to South Carolina’s industrial development. Also, incorporating the reform measures allows the Legislature to move forward on finding a long-term solution to our state’s critical transportation needs."? ?

"Our organization’s mission is to advocate for a safe and efficient highway system. While the bill addresses some of our current needs, everyone recognizes that it falls short on delivering adequate funding to our entire system. We applaud the Governor for dedicating $212 million in recurring dollars."? ?

"Today’s action is a positive step forward. But, as many legislative leaders have noted, a long-term funding formula must be adopted in order to ensure our roads and bridges will meet the needs of generations to come, and we will continue to advocate for our state’s needs."

The South Carolina Alliance to Fix Our Roads is a non-partisan, nonprofit, statewide organization made up of business leaders, associations and chambers of commerce who believe fixing our roads are critical for South Carolina’s prosperity.
