SCAPA was invited to join industries, associations and agencies at the SC Scrap Tire Coalition Meeting back in September. The coalition, led by SCDHEC and the SC Department of Commerce, discussed challenges and opportunities with end-of-life tires in the state. There is a push locally and nationally from the US Tire Manufacturers and their member companies to find a home for scrap tires. One of the common solutions mentioned was the increased usage of waste tires in asphalt. SCDOT's Asphalt Materials Manager Cliff Selkinghaus discussed the current specifications and past usage of ground tire rubber (GTR) in SCDOT's roadways. Selkinghaus, along with SCAPA Executive Director Jayson Jordan and Mary Corley of TriCounty Technical College, had great dialogue with SCDHEC's Myra Reece and SC Commerce's Anna DeLage at the meeting.

The coalition will have another meeting on November 8, but will be held virtually.
