Night Paving Crew, Sloan Construction

Sloan Construction was founded by the late E.D. Sloan in 1933. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy as an ensign in 1918, Mr. Sloan was employed by the South Carolina Highway Department for several years and then by Carolina Road Surfacing Company.

When Carolina Road Surfacing Company collapsed during the Great Depression, Mr. Sloan received two old dump trucks in the liquidation. To that he added his sister’s savings and began to contract construction work as a sole proprietor. Mr. Sloan’s first contract was with the U.S. Navy to repair the storm-damaged breakwater at the Key West Naval Station in 1933.

Other notable projects worked on prior to divestment by the Sloan family included the Panama Canal and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba as well as contracted work in locations such as Azores and Ascension Island.

Sloan was chartered as a South Carolina corporation in 1946, where it saw an expansion from the Upstate to the Midlands in South Carolina in 1955 with the establishment of an office in Columbia, South Carolina. When E. D. Sloan, Jr. retired as the company’s president in 1984, the pursuit of acquisitions to grow the company’s resources and regional foothold continued. Making its mark on the map due to its outstanding performance, quality of work, and talented work force, Sloan Construction was purchased by Colas, Inc., a world leader in road construction, in 1998 along with Reeves Construction Company. Reeves Construction Company, now known as the parent company of Sloan Construction, has expanded the Sloan brand beyond the state of South Carolina into the greater Charlotte, North Carolina area, as well as having established a bridge division that performs work throughout the southeast United States.

The Colas Group’s leadership and focus in road construction and maintenance has expanded to include all transportation infrastructures, commercial and urban developments, and recreation facilities. Colas’ strengths reside in the diversity of their network of 800 construction units and 3,000 material production and recycling sites located in more than 50 countries on five continents. Colas has a workforce of 55,000 people who work on more than 60,000 projects worldwide every year.

Today, Sloan Construction and Colas are paving the way toward more innovative and sustainable projects. Commitment to excellence and the passion to deliver quality service to customers and clients is the driving force behind the success and profitability of our business.
