Road-tested core values prepare RGI for the future

Rogers Group Inc. (RGI) entered the South Carolina market when it acquired Ashmore Brothers in September 2015, but the company has been crushing rocks and building roads since 1908. A driving force for RGI has been its core values of placing the highest value on people, unwavering integrity and excellence in every undertaking. They have been more than a tagline for the privately owned company based in Nashville, Tennessee. In fact, every aspect of RGI’s business is a direct application of those values. Such a grounded approach to these values has seen the company through the highs and lows of the road building industry.

So, how are these core values seen in everyday operation?

First and foremost, they are seen in the company’s commitment to its employees through safety, diversity and development.

Safety. RGI is dedicated to achieving a zero-injury safety culture for its employees. Industry safety standards serve as a baseline, not a benchmark, and as a result, the company boasts one of the best safety ratings in the industry. Top-notch safety managers work with employees to find solutions to site-specific safety hazards. Annual safety refresher training sessions are held for all field employees. Safety meetings are held at the beginning of every shift to review and discuss injuries or near misses reported in other areas of the company. Finally, a safety committee meets regularly to hear from those in the field about how RGI’s safety system can improve. In addition to an industry-leading safety record, these efforts have resulted in awards from trade associations on state and national levels.

Diversity. In addition to a safe workforce, RGI strives to develop the strength of its workforce through diversity, endeavoring to find qualified applicants who bring new perspectives to our teams. One such effort is coordinating mentorships and networking with organizations such as the National Association of Women in Construction, the Society of Women Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers.

Professional development. Employees desire a career path, and RGI has several programs to give employees every opportunity for advancement. Programs for existing employees include equipment certification, trade association memberships and tuition reimbursement. Also, to recruit the miners and road builders of tomorrow, we offer summer internships and management trainee positions.

Next, RGI’s core values can be seen in its commitment to its customers.

RGI’s goal is to provide the highest quality products and services to its customers when they need it. Every year, millions of dollars are invested every year in capital improvement projects to make sure that product quality is top notch and production levels meet the demands of the market. Additionally, RGI’s sales force stays in constant communication with contractors and other customers to make sure they have what they need when they need it.

Lastly, RGI’s core values can be seen in its commitment to local communities.

RGI has a reputation of being a good industrial neighbor in the community. While they have earned that reputation, they certainly don’t take it for granted. Protecting and improving the communities where RGI employees live and raise their families is a priority for the company.

Minimizing impact on environment. RGI is committed to being a responsible steward of the environment. As with safety standards, environmental regulations are just a starting point for RGI, which challenges itself to be an industry leader in dust, noise, water and vibration control. Internal standards are much higher than those set by federal, state and local regulations, and they work closely with city planners, maintain an open dialogue with neighbors and community leaders, and respond to issues as swiftly as possible.

Giving back to the local communities. You cannot build a community without rocks and roads, but RGI works hard to show that commitment to the local community goes beyond that. Through quarry tours and visits to schools and community meetings, RGI makes sure neighbors understand the nature and necessity of our business. They donate money and material to charitable organizations. They also show this commitment when it’s needed the most. In areas hit by natural disasters, public officials know they can call on RGI to help clean up the damage. Perhaps RGI’s greatest asset in the community, though, is its people. When you talk to most Rogers Group employees, whether they operate equipment, examine blueprints, or process invoices, you’re also talking to people involved in their community. They may be a scout leader, a Sunday school teacher, or someone active in a service organization like United Way or Boys and Girls Clubs of America. And RGI supports them 100 percent.

Good companies have clearly stated core values. Great companies, like RGI, show a commitment to those values in their everyday operations.
