Excited to bring their education experience to sunny California, the Manufactures and Tent Rental Association (MATRA) held their first West Coast Spring Training on Feb. 28, 2023.

Supported by CRA and hosted at 24/7 Events in Valencia, CA, the spring training kicked off with a continental breakfast and networking time along with the MATRA education committee providing a full day of tent-education seminars, safety training and a warehouse tour of the 24/7 Events facility. It was a homerun!

You consider your company’s safety-incentive program an effective way to promote safe behavior among your employees and reduce injuries. But OSHA could see the very same program as unlawful discrimination and a violation of OSHA recordkeeping regulations and whistleblower protections. OSHA regards the ability to report injuries or illnesses without fear of retaliation as “crucial to protecting worker safety and health.” Without that right, “Employees do not learn of and correct dangerous conditions that have resulted in injuries, and injured employees may not receive the proper medical attention or the workers’ compensation benefits.”According to an OSHA memorandum to compliance officers, certain incentive programs discourage the reporting of injuries and encourage discrimination against workers who report injuries.

From an article in the Palm Springs Desert Sun, by Jennifer Sangalang.
At 2 a.m. Sunday, March 12, California residents, like most of the country, had to set their clocks forward by one hour. The seasonal back and forth continues for now — even though in 2018 California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 7, a ballot initiative that opened the door to permanently adopting daylight saving time. Prop. 7 gave state lawmakers the power to pass legislation making daylight saving time permanent. Less than a month later, Assemblyman Kansen Chu introduced a bill to do just that, AB 7, but the Legislature never passed it. Even if it had, the federal government would still need to OK the change.

Last year, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved a bill called the Sunshine Protection Act, which was introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida. The bill would permanently extend daylight saving time from eight months of the year to the full 12 months. But the measure has not yet been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, where it was "held at the desk" and didn't get a vote, nor has it been signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Action Alert: Please call Sen. Seyarto and Assemblyman Chen to thank them for co-authoring this important constitutional amendment to protect California families from unaffordable tax increases.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association (HJTA) is so pleased to announce that Sen. Kelly Seyarto and Assemblyman Philip Chen have co-authored Senate Constitutional Amendment 4, which would restore the right of parents to transfer their home and a limited amount of other property to their children without reassessment to market value and would do so without any change to the property-tax bill. SCA 4 would fix Proposition 19, the 2020 ballot measure that took away those constitutional rights. SCA 4 also restores the right of grandparents to transfer the same property to grandchildren if the children’s parents are deceased.

These important rights were placed in the constitution by Proposition 58 in 1986, which was put on the ballot by a unanimous vote of the Legislature and passed with the approval of 75% of voters. In 1996, Proposition 193 extended the same rights to grandparents in some situations. But because of Proposition 19, these rights are gone. Now, with only limited exceptions, property is reassessed to current market value when transferred within families. This results in huge tax increases and often forces families to sell long-held properties, especially small apartment buildings, which accelerates gentrification and the loss of affordable housing.
