How Are You Doing?

Thank you to all who take time to participate in our surveys. CRA uses the information we gather to better serve you. If you have an idea for a survey for CRA members, please send your request to CRA at Info@CalRental.org. This month, we asked members "How are you doing?" in terms of changes in their businesses since COVID.

1. What type of Rental Business do you have?
General Rental: 45% (10 responses)
Party Rental: 27% (6 responses)
Both: 27% (6 responses)

2. Are you open full hours?
Yes: 77% (17 responses)
No: 23% (5 responses)
Additional comments:
1. Closing at 3 pm has not effected income so far.
2. 9 to 3, M-F.
3. We took advantage of the hours reduction of 2020 to change to business hours that we are more comfortable with permanently.
4. Closed on Sundays and at 5:00 pm vs. 5:30 pm.
5. 6 days a week only and 1 hour shorter.

3. Are you at full staff?
Yes: 59% (13 responses)
No: 41% (9 responses)

1. Can’t find help.
2. See question #4.
3. As full as we can get... down an entire truck and crew from 2019, but not finding any good prospects.
4. It’s been difficult to hire, but it is getting easier.

4. How are you finding employees? (19 responses)
1. We post online, we direct everyone to apply in person.
2. Indeed, Facebook, Craigslist.
3. Word of mouth.
4. I have not hired any new employees since covid started.
5. Truck drivers are scarce.
6. Indeed / ADP Referrals.
7. Indeed, Zip Recruiter. Doing employee recruitment module thru ADP (our payroll software).
8. Impossible to find.
9. Indeed, Craigslist and Employee Referral Program.
10. We are understaffed. No one wants to work, so our staff is overworked.

12. We’re not!! Tried FB ads and posts, local Temp Agencies... nothing.
13. Any way we can! Can’t wait until the unemployed aren’t paid to stay home!
14. Word of mouth and family.
15. Temp service and other employees.
16. Help wanted sign posted in window.
17. Temp agency.
18. We tried using ZipRecruiter, which for the type of position we need filled was a failure. We have been trying temp agencies, however, only one of five was able to help due to a shortage of workforce.

5. Upon hiring, are you doing a pre-employment physical?
Yes: 29% (6 responses)
No: 71% (15 responses)

6. Are you drug testing?
Yes: 50% (10 responses)
No: 50% (10 responses)
Additional comments:
1. For DOT or safety sensitive positions.
2. Only drivers.
3. CDL drivers only.

7. Are you drug testing for THC?
Yes: 36% (4 responses)
No: 64% (7 responses)

8. Do you drug test for accidents?
Yes: 92% (11 responses)
No: 8% (1 response)
Additional comments:
1. Only if injuries or a tow-away.

9. Survey Ideas
1. What’s the average age you get rid of your equipment in the various categories? Is there a formula you use to determine the sale price of used equipment?
2. Repeal the minimum wage.
