The City of Toronto’s latest Corporate Asset Management Plan finds the municipality has taken a notable chunk out of its infrastructure deficit.
The plan, which is updated annually, outlines how recent strategic infrastructure renewal investments aim to reduce the City’s infrastructure backlog and improve service reliability for residents in the years ahead. This year’s edition finds that the city has reduced its renewal gap from the $26 billion identified in last year’s plan to $18 billion – a drop of $8 billion. The city says the reduction is thanks to more than $32 billion in planned investments to maintain and improve infrastructure that were approved in the city’s capital plan. Source: Link2Build
The Ontario government has introduced new legislation that aims to speed up the construction new homes and infrastructure.
If passed, the Protect Ontario by Building Faster and Smarter Act will streamline development processes and reduce costs in partnerships with municipalities.
The province is also increasing its investment in housing-enabling infrastructure by adding $400 million in immediate funding to the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (HEWSF) and Municipal Housing Infrastructure Fund (MHIP). The additional money brings the combined funding of both to nearly $2.3 billion over four years.
“We are taking bold action to protect Ontario in the face of economic uncertainty by speeding up construction so we can lower housing costs and keep workers on the job,” said Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Rob Flack. “The legislation we’re tabling today responds to recommendations and requests from municipal leaders, and will help build the homes and infrastructure Ontario needs.”

The Government of Ontario has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the first package of civil and utility work for the Hamilton Light Rail Transit (LRT). This marks another milestone in the province’s plan to protect Ontario by building transit, reducing gridlock, and creating thousands of good-paying jobs in one of Ontario’s fastest-growing cities.
“Today, we’re one step closer to getting shovels in the ground on this critical transit project that will connect thousands of residents in Hamilton to good jobs and housing, while protecting Ontario workers in the face of President Trump’s unfair tariffs,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Under Premier Ford’s leadership, our government is delivering the largest transit expansion in North America to tackle gridlock, keep workers and families moving, and create good-paying jobs.”

Within the Enbridge Damage Prevention department, the team is always trying to come up with creative solutions to reduce gas line damages. One consistent trend we observe is a higher rate of damage from Sewer and Water work. Jason Syragakis came up with a creative challenge for a Toronto-based sewer and water contractor, CG Construction Services Ltd, to complete one full year of ground disturbance with no gas line damages. This was a lofty target given the volume and scope of the projects CG Construction Services was undertaking in 2024.
