STARTAPPINew or Revised Standards, TIPs, and Useful Methods
TIP 0404-26 "Paper machine clothing performance analysis" (Revision) General Announcements
Although there have been problems with the online voting system for TAPPI Standards for a while now, the good news is that TAPPI is almost ready to launch a new system based on one developed by our vendor, the Kavi Corporation, called Kavi Workspace. Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) members should have already received an email from admin@standards.tappi.org. This will be the sender for messages that the TAPPI Standards Manager creates in the system. The email provided login instructions, a user name, and a password. After an SSIG member logs in the first time, the password can be changed; users can use the same password they use for the main TAPPI website but should be aware that logging into one does not log one into the other (they are hosted on separate servers. On the user’s home page will appear general information about the system on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side will be notices in case there are ballots to be voted on new documents of interest. Whenever there is an item posted for ballot or any other documents or emails posted in any of the SSIGs that a user belongs to, an email notice will go out. In the general information on the right will be links to obtain help and a link to online training videos as well. In the upper left-hand corner of the home page will be a "Groups" dropdown box. The list in this dropdown box will be divided between "My Groups" and "All Groups." "My Groups" are the active groups -- i.e., groups where some activity is currently going on (Work Item opened, ballots in progress, etc.) -- that the logged-in user is a member of. "All Groups" shows all SSIGs that are currently active -- including those the user belongs to (in bold). Click on any group to go to its home page. Those who are not a member of a particular group will see a link to request membership in that SSIG. Among the active groups to be listed are the standards that will come up for review in 2014. These will be visible when the review begins. If you have not seen the list of standards up for review this year, see the related article in this newsletter, or go to http://www.tappi.org/Standards-TIPs/Review-Schedule-for-TAPPI-Standards.aspx. The first ballot scheduled to happen under the new system will be for the five-year review of T 1006 on May 6, 2014. If you are a member of any SSIGs, and you have not received the login instructions, please contact standards@tappi.org immediately As with the old system, you will receive emails alerting you whenever a ballot from one of your SSIGs is up for vote. If you are attending PaperCon in Nashville, there will be a demonstration of the new system on Tuesday, April 29, at 5:00 pm. Please check the program book on site for the room. To join existing SSIGs that may not show up yet on the new site (because they are not currently active), you can still sign up for them at any time by visiting the Subject Categories page. UM 821 "A non-destructive production tool to measure the general flute quality and damage of corrugated board using resonance frequency technology" has been withdrawn. The reason for withdrawal is that the method does not adequately describe the apparatus or mechanism by which the measurement is made, and it does not currently match any techniques or instruments available. If you have any objections to this withdrawal, please send a message to standards@tappi.org. This Spring, the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) and Quality and Standards Management Committee will both meet during PaperCon 2014, April 27-30 in Nashville. PaperCon 2014, TAPPI’s largest annual event, focuses on new ways to run more profitably and stay competitive. The Papermaking Program covers a number of topics guaranteed to give you great ideas to take back to the mill. Learn to optimize your machine(s) through innovations in web imaging systems, improving pressing efficiency, wet end optimization, and vacuum systems upgrades. The Coating & Graphic Arts Program focuses on the future of printing and its demands on paper and board coating. In addition to mill manager and superintendent panels, the PIMA Management Program features sessions on reliability, training operators of the future, safety and lean manufacturing. Register now for best rates. Your registration to PaperCon also includes full access to these programs:
Plans are already underway for the 100th Anniversary of TAPPI, which will be observed during the 2015 PaperCon Conference in Atlanta, April 19-22.2015.
As part of the celebration, TAPPI and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have invited ISO Technical Committee TC 6 and its subcommittees and working groups to hold its 2015 meeting during the PaperCon week. To keep up with the 100th Anniversary plans, there's a special website: http://www.tappi100years.org. On this site you can also sign up for the special newsletter for this event. Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document. Overdue Reports Distributed
A proposal has been submitted to create a new standard for wet pin adhesion of corrugated board by selective separation. If you would like to participate in the review of this Standard Test Method, you must join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) so that you will be included on the ballot. To join the SSIG for this standard, please contact the TAPPI Standards Department at standards@tappi.org no later than May 16, 2014. The scope of this proposed new standard is: This method is used to measure the force required to separate the linerboard facings from the medium in corrugated board after the board has been immersed in water for a period of time. It can be used to evaluate the water resistance properties or levels in water resistant adhesive. This procedure mirrors the process in T 821 "Pin adhesion of corrugated board by selective separation," with differences in how samples are prepared for testing and how results are interpreted.
SSIG Members Needed
A proposal has been made to open an early review of T 489 "Bending resistance (stiffness) of paper and paperboard (Taber-type tester in basic configuration)." The reason for the early review is to ballot this in parallel with the revision of T 566 "Bending resistance (stiffness) of paper (Taber-type tester in 0 to 10 Taber stiffness unit configuration)." The two methods need to be harmonized; TAPPI guidelines will not allow both procedures to be in the same method. The scope of T 489 is: This test method covers a procedure used to measure the resistance to bending of paper and paperboard. This test method is used to determine the bending moment required to deflect the free end of a 38 mm (1.5 in.) wide vertically clamped specimen 15 degrees from its center line when the load is applied 50 mm (1.97 in.) away from the clamp. The resistance to bending is calculated from the bending moment. A Standard-Specific Interest Group already exists for this standard, but this notice is to recruit any other interested parties to join the group. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. If you are already a member of one or more of the TAPPI SSIGs, you should have already received a notification on how to log into the new website for Standards Development and Review. From the "All Groups" listed on your home page, you will see T 489 listed; click on that link and then click "Join Group." (If it appears in bold on your list, it means you are already a member of that SSIG, and thus it should also appear in your "My Groups" list.) If you have not received login instructions for the new site and would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org or by fax at +1-770-446-6947, no later than June 2, 2014. A proposal has been made to open an early review of T 563 "Equivalent Black Area (EBA) and count of visible dirt in pulp, paper and paperboard by image analysis." A revision of T 563 is being proposed to update the specifications of the calibration plates so that an authorized laboratory can measure the calibration plates and assign new certification values to them. The standard should also recommend that an authorized laboratory conduct a yearly monitoring program on randomly selected calibration plates so that TAPPI’s inventory of plates meets the specifications in the standard. The scope of T 563 is: This method uses image analysis to determine the level of dirt in pulp, paper, and paperboard in terms of Equivalent Black Area (EBA) of dirt specks within the physical area range of 0.02 to 3.0 square millimeters reported in parts per million as well as the number of dirt specks per square meter of sample. Using the algorithm prescribed in this method, the maximum dirt size is limited to 3.0 square millimeters. Extension to other speck sizes (for example those greater than 3.0 square millimeters in physical area), may require changes in equipment, calculation procedures, or both, and is not covered in this test method. This method cannot be used for physical area measurements since it does not correctly measure the dirt specks for that mode of measurement. From the "All Groups" listed on your home page, you will see this standard listed; click on that link and then click "Join Group." (If it appears in bold on your list, it means you are already a member of that SSIG, and thus it should also appear in your "My Groups" list.) If you have not received login instructions for the new site and would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org or by fax at +1-770-446-6947, no later than June 2, 2014.
Standards Coming Up For Review
The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote. Listed below are the Standards that will be up for review in 2014. The date indicated is the target date on which the draft will be distributed to the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for that particular Standard. Any interested individuals who wish to be part of the voting for any Standard should send a message to standards@tappi.org and request voting membership on the corresponding SSIG, prior to the target ballot date, if possible. Anyone who joins the SSIG before the target balloting date will receive a notice of the ballot. If you have joined the Standard Specific Interest Group for any Standard, you will receive a notice for ballot at the proper time with instructions for casting your vote and making your comments.
