TIP 0404-26 "Paper machine clothing performance analysis" (Revision)

A proposal has been made to open an early review of T 489 "Bending resistance (stiffness) of paper and paperboard (Taber-type tester in basic configuration)." The reason for the early review is to ballot this in parallel with the revision of T 566 "Bending resistance (stiffness) of paper (Taber-type tester in 0 to 10 Taber stiffness unit configuration)." The two methods need to be harmonized; TAPPI guidelines will not allow both procedures to be in the same method.

The scope of T 489 is: This test method covers a procedure used to measure the resistance to bending of paper and paperboard. This test method is used to determine the bending moment required to deflect the free end of a 38 mm (1.5 in.) wide vertically clamped specimen 15 degrees from its center line when the load is applied 50 mm (1.97 in.) away from the clamp.  The resistance to bending is calculated from the bending moment.

A proposal has been made to open an early review of T 563 "Equivalent Black Area (EBA) and count of visible dirt in pulp, paper and paperboard by image analysis." A revision of T 563 is being proposed to update the specifications of the calibration plates so that an authorized laboratory can measure the calibration plates and assign new certification values to them. The standard should also recommend that an authorized laboratory conduct a yearly monitoring program on randomly selected calibration plates so that TAPPI’s inventory of plates meets the specifications in the standard.

The scope of T 563 is: This method uses image analysis to determine the level of dirt in pulp, paper, and paperboard in terms of Equivalent Black Area (EBA) of dirt specks within the physical area range of 0.02 to 3.0 square millimeters reported in parts per million as well as the number of dirt specks per square meter of sample.  Using the algorithm prescribed in this method, the maximum dirt size is limited to 3.0 square millimeters.  Extension to other speck sizes (for example those greater than 3.0 square millimeters in physical area), may require changes in equipment, calculation procedures, or both, and is not covered in this test method.  This method cannot be used for physical area measurements since it does not correctly measure the dirt specks for that mode of measurement.

Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on February 27, 2014. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairmen for these overdue reviews as well as to chairmen of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI.

Anyone who did not receive the overdue reports but who have an interest may obtain copies by requesting them from standards@tappi.org.

Working Group Chairmen: These reports were sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting (April 30, 2014), Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.

The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the Renaissance Hotel/Nashville Convention Center Complex, Nashville, TN (the site of the 2014 PaperCon Conference).  SARG approval is the last step prior to publication for any new or revised standard.

In order to act on any appeals from TAPPI members relevant to the standards up for approval, the SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation. The agenda was posted on the SARG page at least 50 days prior to the meeting, in accordance with TAPPI’s guidelines. There are links from the agenda items to the final drafts that are up for approval.

A proposal has been submitted to create a new standard for wet pin adhesion of corrugated board by selective separation.

If you would like to participate in the review of this Standard Test Method, you must join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) so that you will be included on the ballot. To join the SSIG for this standard, please contact the TAPPI Standards Department at standards@tappi.org no later than May 16, 2014.

The scope of this proposed new standard is: This method is used to measure the force required to separate the linerboard facings from the medium in corrugated board after the board has been immersed in water for a period of time.  It can be used to evaluate the water resistance properties or levels in water resistant adhesive. This procedure mirrors the process in T 821 "Pin adhesion of corrugated board by selective separation," with differences in how samples are prepared for testing and how results are interpreted.
