Early review of T 563

A proposal has been made to open an early review of T 563 "Equivalent Black Area (EBA) and count of visible dirt in pulp, paper and paperboard by image analysis." A revision of T 563 is being proposed to update the specifications of the calibration plates so that an authorized laboratory can measure the calibration plates and assign new certification values to them. The standard should also recommend that an authorized laboratory conduct a yearly monitoring program on randomly selected calibration plates so that TAPPI’s inventory of plates meets the specifications in the standard.

The scope of T 563 is: This method uses image analysis to determine the level of dirt in pulp, paper, and paperboard in terms of Equivalent Black Area (EBA) of dirt specks within the physical area range of 0.02 to 3.0 square millimeters reported in parts per million as well as the number of dirt specks per square meter of sample.  Using the algorithm prescribed in this method, the maximum dirt size is limited to 3.0 square millimeters.  Extension to other speck sizes (for example those greater than 3.0 square millimeters in physical area), may require changes in equipment, calculation procedures, or both, and is not covered in this test method.  This method cannot be used for physical area measurements since it does not correctly measure the dirt specks for that mode of measurement.

A Standard-Specific Interest Group already exists for this standard, but this notice is to recruit any other interested parties to join the group. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote.

If you are already a member of one or more of the TAPPI SSIGs, you should have already received a notification on how to log into the new website for Standards Development and Review. From the "All Groups" listed on your home page, you will see this standard listed; click on that link and then click "Join Group." (If it appears in bold on your list, it means you are already a member of that SSIG, and thus it should also appear in your "My Groups" list.)

If you have not received login instructions for the new site and would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org or by fax at +1-770-446-6947, no later than June 2, 2014.

TAPPI Standards guidelines require that all TAPPI members receive notification of any proposed new Standard or TIPs. This message is being sent to you because you are a TAPPI member; have purchased TIPs or Standards products from TAPPI; or because you have previously expressed interest in this topic.
