Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.

TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. TAPPI members can view any drafts that are in ballot by logging in to the TAPPI web site (www.tappi.org), clicking on "My TAPPI," and then clicking on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left side of the page. If you would like to review and comment on any draft and are not a member of the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG), you may view the draft on line or you may request a copy of the draft being balloted by writing to standards@tappi.org. TAPPI members may join SSIGs as permanent members; go to the Subject Category page to download forms for this purpose. Nonmembers of TAPPI may join any SSIG as a voting member; to do so, send a message to standards@tappi.org to receive a copy of the draft and a ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 632 cm-01 "Analysis of sodium silicate" (October 28, 2010)

A proposal has been made for a new Provisional Method: "Preparation of sheets for ERIC determination (sheet mould method with filtrate paper)."

The scope of the method is: This method provides a means for producing high retention, low grammage sheets of recycled fiber pulp for effective residual ink concentration (ERIC) determination according to T 567, as originally proposed in two reference works. The opacity of the prepared sheets remains below 97.0%, which enables the measurement of the scattering coefficient that is utilized in ERIC measurement. ERIC measurement is dependent on the distribution of ink and other light scattering particles. Hence, even subtle changes in the fines or fillers content in recycled pulp can have a significant impact on its near-infrared light scattering. Similarly the test media must retain as much fines and fillers as possible to represent the original pulp during ERIC measurement. Thus, fines, fillers, and their retention on the test sheet have a profound effect on the ERIC value observed. For this reason, the measurement of pulp scattering has been recommended during ERIC determination. This takes into account the sum effect of all light scattering material and hence the changes in pulp properties are taken into consideration when studying ink concentration.

A Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) must be formed for this proposal. Any individuals who are interested in this Standard may join the SSIG to receive ballots when this method is ready for vote. If you would like to join the SSIG for this project, please notify the Standards Department at standards@tappi.org or by fax at +1-770-446-6947 no later than November 22, 2010.

SSIG Members Needed

TAPPI Standards T 531 cm-01 "Starch consumption in corrugated board (enzymatic/gravimetric method)" and T 532 "Starch consumption in corrugated board (enzymatic/colorimetric method)" are up for ten-year review (Classical Methods). There are currently only nine people on each Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG); ten is the minimum required.

If you would like to join either or both of these SSIGs, please send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than November 1, 2010. Assuming we get enough SSIG members, these methods will be balloted for review shortly after that date.

Standards Coming Up For Review
A proposal has been submitted for the early review of T 419 "Starch in Paper." The proposal indicates several changes relevant to technology and calculations plus some editorial changes. If you would like to join the Standard-Specific INterest Group (SSIG) in order to vote on the proposed revision, please notify standards@tappi.org no later than November 12, 2010.
