Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting. Propose a New Standard or Technical Information Paper (TIP) Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a Standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a Standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document. STAR of the Month
This TIP describes a procedure for checking the parallel of corrugating rolls in a single facer using two-ply NCR paper. The impressions made on the paper by the corrugating roll flute tips are then compared to evaluate parallelism. Misaligned or out of parallel corrugator rolls can result in medium fracture, leaning flutes, and hi-lows. It can also reduce the “life” of corrugator rolls and the drive motor. The simplest method of checking the parallel of corrugator rolls is to use two ply NCR copy paper.

The scope of the proposal for a new Technical Information Paper is shown below, as well as the assigned Subject Category, the date when the Work Item was opened, the title of the new proposal and the name of the Working Group Chair (WGC). 1101 - Process Control Scope: This document describes guidelines and recommended practices for the detection and quantification of dirt specks in a moving sheet of bleached kraft pulp using light transmitted through the pulp sheet. Dirt speck results are reported as “Physical” Size and not as the Equivalent Black Area (EBA) of the laboratory standard method T563, which must be measured with reflected light. The Standard-Specific Interest Groups (SSIGs) for the following Standards are in need of additional members. These groups may or may not have ballots currently open. T 1212 sp-21 Light sources for evaluating papers including those containing fluorescent whitening agents Participating in a SSIG is free and open to anyone interested. Join now! If no progress is made on balancing these SSIGs, then the respective methods may be considered for withdrawal at the next Q&SMC meeting. The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote. Listed below are the Standards that will be up for review in 2024. The date indicated is the target date on which the draft will be distributed to the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for that particular Standard. T 401 om-20 Fiber analysis of paper and paperboard (October 7, 2024) Any interested individuals who wish to be part of the voting for any Standard should send a message to standards@tappi.org and request voting membership on the corresponding SSIG, prior to the target ballot date, if possible. Anyone who joins the SSIG before the target balloting date will receive a notice of the ballot. Standards Ready for Final Approval at SARG

The Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) is a group of TAPPI members appointed by the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) who are familiar with the TAPPI Standards process and are qualified to participate in the final review of Standards after they have been approved by the appropriate Standards-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). SARG is required to meet twice a year to act on Standards that are in the final stage of review. The next meeting of the Standards Advisory Review Group (SARG) will be held virtually on Thursday, May 16th, 2024, 1:00 – 2:00 pm (EST). The SARG meeting is open to anyone for participation to discuss any appeals relevant to the Standards up for approval. The meeting agenda and links to the final drafts have been posted on the SARG Page. If you would like to participate virtually via Zoom, please email standards@tappi.org by May 9th, 2024 for access. Overdue Reports Distributed
Reports outlining the overdue reviews for Standards and TIPs were sent to the Quality and Standards Management Committee (Q&SMC) on April 22, 2024. Copies of these reports were also sent to the assigned Working Group Chairs for these overdue reviews as well as to Chairs of the appropriate technical groups in TAPPI. Anyone who did not receive the overdue report but who have an interest may obtain a copy by requesting it from standards@tappi.org. Working Group Chairs: This report was sent to you for your information and action, if required. Q&SMC may, according to the Standards Guidelines, withdraw any Standards or TIPs whose reviews are overdue, especially if it appears that little progress is being made on the Work Item. If more information or indications of progress on these Work Items are received prior to the next meeting on May 16th, 2024, Q&SMC will take these reports of progress under consideration.
