Special note: Documents appearing in the TAPPI online version of the Standards and TIPs are updated once a month (usually around the 15th). So it is possible that there is a delay between the publication announcement and the posting online. If you are a subscriber to the online access to Standards and TIPs and you are in a hurry for new documents that have not yet been posted, you can send a request to standards@tappi.org.

TAPPI Standards in Ballot

The TAPPI Standards regulations require public review of standards that are up for ballot. TAPPI members can view any drafts that are in ballot by logging in to the TAPPI web site (www.tappi.org), clicking on "My TAPPI," and then clicking on the "Standards Public Draft Review" link on the left side of the page. If you would like to review and comment on any draft and are not a member of the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG), you may view the draft on line or you may request a copy of the draft being balloted by writing to standards@tappi.org. TAPPI members may join SSIGs as permanent members; go to the Subject Category page to download forms for this purpose. Nonmembers of TAPPI may join any SSIG as a voting member; to do so, send a message to standards@tappi.org to receive a copy of the draft and a ballot.

Listed below are TAPPI Standards that have recently gone out for ballot to the corresponding Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). The date in parentheses is the closing date for voting.

T 841 "Edgewise compressive strength of corrugated fiberboard using the Morris method (short column test)" (for withdrawal, December 6, 2012)
T 402 "Standard conditioning and testing atmospheres for paper, board, pulp handsheets, and related products" (December 7, 2012)
T 549 "Coefficients of static and kinetic friction of uncoated writing and printing paper by use of the horizontal plane method" (December 21, 2012)
T 577 "Score bend test" (January 2, 2013)
T 230 "Viscosity of pulp (capillary viscometer method)" (January 3, 2013)
T 489 "Bending resistance (stiffness) of paper and paperboard (Taber-type tester in basic configuration)" (January 2, 2013)

General Announcements

TAPPI is in the initial stages of developing a new TAPPI Standard or TIP for verifying the recyclability of aqueous barrier coatings. We are seeking technical experts in the area of recycling aqueous coatings to work on this proposed standard. Experts do not have to be TAPPI members, although a TAPPI member among the group would need to serve as working group chair for the project..

If you are interested in participating in initial discussion, please contact Scott Springmier (sspringmier@tappi.org).

Work continues on TAPPI Standard T NEW (WI 3021) "Standard Terms and Their Definitions for Cellulose Nanomaterials." A third draft has been prepared, after hosting two webinars with international participation, and will be released soon for comments. If you are interested in participating in this process, please contact Colleen Walker at TAPPI at cwalker@tappi.org.

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

Former Useful Method 808 "Plybond Peeling Strength of Linerboard and Corrugated Board" described a simple method which indicated the peeling strength of the weakest ply in a multiply sheet. This procedure can also be applied to the liner after corrugating. A new working group has been formed to reinstate and revise this procedure, with the goal of bringing the method into compliance with current UM guidelines.

If you would like to join the working group and participate in the reinstatement of this Useful Method, please send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than December 7, 2012.

A working group has been formed to make revisions to UM 821 "A Nondestructive Production Tool to Measure the General Flute Quality and Damage of Corrugated Board Using Resonance Frequency Technology."

According to the working group's proposal, damage to the flute structure during box production can be difficult to determine, and occurs in nearly all box plant operations. UM 821 provides a technique to measure the degree of damage, allowing boxmakers to determine the source and cause of excessive corrugated board damage. This revision is being undertaken with the goal of better describing the operation of the instrument and clarifying the fundamental principles of operations, so that the method can be generally applied. Contributions from those who have experience using the instrument would be appreciated.

If you would like to join the working group and participate in the revision of this Useful Method, please send a message to standards@tappi.org no later than December 7, 2012.

T 523 "Dynamic measurement of water vapor transfer through sheet materials" has been withdrawn for technical reason by its Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG). Because is was withdrawn technically, it will no longer be available for distribution.

The reason for withdrawal is that there is an ASTM method, ASTM E 96, for water vapor transfer of thermal insulation and applies to several types of materials including paper. There appears to be a lack of interest in developing an equivalent TAPPI method since the ASTM method is in use.

ISO Technical Committee 6 (Paper, board and pulps) has two new groups under its jurisdiction:

Ad hoc Group 1 (AHG 1) - Framework for the development of International Standards on the Measurement and Characterization of Nanocellulose
Working Group10 (WG 10) - Automated testing

The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for ISO TC 6 (administered by TAPPI) needs to identify technical experts to serve on these two groups. If you have an interest in either, please send a message to standards@tappi.org.

The Process and Product Quality Division has some opportunities for volunteers to participate in TAPPI activities. The Division Council needs a Secretary to serve one year (2013) as Secretary, then move up to Vice-Chair for two years (2014 and 2015), and then to serve as Chair of the Division for two years (2016 and 2017). If you are interested in involvement in standards development, committee involvement is a good place to start.

The Tissue Properties Subcommittee of the Physical Properties Committee also needs a volunteer to serve as Secretary in 2013, then as Vice-Chair in 2014 and 2015 and as Chair in 2016 and 2017. The Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee needs someone to serve as Vice-Chair in 2013 and as Chair in 2014 and 2015, and someone else to serve as Secretary in 2013, Vice-Chair in 2014 and 2015 and Chair in 2016 and 2017. The Optical Properties Committee needs someone to serve as Secretary in 2013, Vice-Chair in 2014 and 2015 and Chair in 2016 and 2017.

Please contact standards@tappi.org if you have an interest in working on these committees.
