Stora Enso has received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award 2025 in the Product Design category for its recyclable and scalable gift packaging portfolio developed for Finnish design house Marimekko.
Launched in May 2024, the packaging features iconic Marimekko prints—such as Unikko—and is made from renewable, certified materials. The innovative boxes are designed to fold without adhesive tape or padding and can adapt to various product shapes, making them both functional and sustainable. Some include handles to double as reusable shopping bags.
The Red Dot jury praised the packaging for reducing resource use, supporting brand identity, and offering visual appeal with sustainable design. “The Marimekko gift portfolio demonstrates to what extent smart packaging design can be made sustainable,” the jury noted.
Anna Kjellberg, Design Director at Stora Enso, said the award reflects the team's success in combining beauty, protection, and brand purpose. Marimekko’s Eija Salmela added that the packaging was intended to be both joyful and reusable, giving it a second life after gifting.
The Red Dot Award, one of the world’s largest and most respected design competitions since 1955, recognizes products with outstanding aesthetic and functional quality.
