MPI Potomac Unplugged

Courageous Conversation Continued

May 19, 2022

4-7:30 p.m.

Royal Sonesta, Washington, D.C.

or Virtual

Here we are in middle of 2022 and the meeting and event planning world is still changing. The new rules and needs keep going.

Transparency and honest conversations are vital to keep us going. MPI Potomac is here to help us move forward by continuing the courageous conversations that bring sensible solutions!

Join us as thought leaders from hotels, destinations, expo companies, production, and in-house and independent planners sit down to share their real-life experiences and challenges in order to have real conversations about what is needed when executing an event as well as the best ways to continue to work together for that win-win.

Learner Outcomes:
  • Recognizing the impact the pandemic has on future booking parameters, meetings specifications and partnerships.
  • Best practices on what to ask for in your contracts from the perspective of all parties involved.
  • Understanding of financial needs from both parties to execute meetings and events.

Registration for Spring Back to Business:                                                                                      Edu-Networking With MPI and PCMA Is Open!

Please join MPI Potomac and PCMA Capital Chapter on Thursday, May 26, as we spring back to business with our first ever “Edu-networking” Event.

We’re all feeling a little rusty these days when it comes to networking at business events. Let’s get back to basics with a short presentation and panel discussion on member engagement and networking.

Then apply what we’ve learned during our interactive networking session. We’ve pulled out all the stops with garden games on the hotel patio and gardens, cocktails, demonstrations, and plenty of time to meet new people and catch up with those we haven’t seen in a long time. We even have a few surprises up our sleeve.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Perspective – What Do You See?

Perspective shapes the way we write, behave or discuss how we interpret people, experiences or events. It’s a point of view. How we view our life events depends on our individual life experiences, culture or perception of identity.

Our experiences can be interpreted in different ways if we manage to look at them from different perspectives. We are better able to understand others and work in harmony if we accept or try to understand other viewpoints. As an exercise in looking at things from a different perspective, examine the following visuals and answer the questions beneath each.

1.  What two images do you see here?

2.  Is this just a bunch of black boxes or something else?

3.  What two images do you see here?

April is Diversity Month, and the MPI Potomac DE&I Committee, in partnership with our DE&I Sponsor of the Month – Visit Raleigh, will be sharing more on diversity and perspective throughout the month of April. Why are diverse teams important? Diverse teams provide different perspectives, which result in different solutions. They are, therefore, better at solving problems, resulting in higher productivity, efficiency and innovation. Additionally, culturally diverse groups can use their strengths to overcome the shortcomings of others, which invariably turns them into a powerful group. All this leads to higher revenue and profits and a better retention.

As Business Goes From Zero to 100, How Do You Stand Out as a Sales Leader?

“Are you B.U.D.? Better, Unique and Desirable?”
Thomas Ellis is the President and Chief Sales Coach for EWC Consultants. With over 30 years’ experience, Ellis is known as the Expert “Sales 101” Trainer. Here is a summary shared for our Sales Leaders:

The culture of sales has changed in the last century. We live in the information age where businesses and consumers alike can access information with the click of their mouse. What does this mean for the modern sales representative? It means that you must be Better, Unique and Desirable. The B.U.D. Factor represents the characteristics you need to embody to serve your customer and ultimately close more sales.

What does this mean though? How can you be better, unique and desirable? It starts with your mindset. Are you selling to make your number, or are you selling to help your customer? If you start with the customer in mind first, this will guide you to the right actions, but it’s easier said than done.

Let’s start with Better. One of the ways that you can be better than the rest is to spend time on proper preparation. It’s hard work, but if you prepare yourself properly for a sales call, a follow up or a networking meeting, you will get the most value out of each experience and save yourself time and effort in the long run. Because it’s hard work, most sales professionals don’t properly prepare.

Unique, isn’t everyone unique? Yes, but let your personality shine through. Most people are taught that being professional means not sharing your personality. You can do both at the same time. People like to do business with those they like. Give your potential customers a chance to get to know you in a professional way.

Finally, what about Desirable? It’s not what is desirable to you, it’s what is desirable to your customer. Put your customer hat on for a moment. What do you appreciate when buying a product or booking a service? What do you look for in determining who to do business with? Chances are your prospects value those things as well.

This process was part of my inspiration for creating my recently published book. It comes from years of experience and success in sales and sales training. Are you B.U.D.?
