Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Written by Shameka Jennings, MTA, CMP, CAE

If people can't see themselves reflected in your brand, they won't engage with it. And if people aren't engaging with your brand, they aren't buying from your brand. By not incorporating DEI, you are excluding potential and current community members/consumers and leaving money on the table. Here are a few ideas to get you started with your plans to celebrate diversity within your organization:

1. Highlight how Black people created (historically), are creating (presently) and can create (futuristically) an impact in your organization and industry. This can be a social media campaign or an email segment. Tie in opportunities on how to engage with your organization to further the impact.

2. Amplify (diverse and new) Latinx voices in your community. Do a social media takeover where members and industry leaders can use your platform to center their stories, share their experiences and inspire young professionals of color as they look to advance in their careers. (Latinx is a gender-neutral term used with increasing frequency.)

Wellness Centered Leadership

"We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own 'to do' list," Mrs. Obama told Vogue in 2016.

The theme for Black History Month 2022 is “Black Health and Wellness,” with special emphasis on healthcare access and improving wellness.

These are challenging times for our industry which have included extensive changes and unknowns. This has left some people feeling exhausted, defeated, and unmotivated.

In the last two plus years we have seen leaders step up and step down. The stress and pressure to keep the work force moving forward, looking ahead, engaged, productive, healthy, and staying positive, is unprecedented. What more can leaders do? Ensure your team members feel heard, seen and feel ‘safe’ at the table to provide input on strategies and solutions. There are numerous models of leadership and one approach that is used in healthcare is Wellness-Centered Leadership (WCL). The Wellness-Centered Leadership Model places a priority on the well-being of those who carry out the mission of an organization daily.

WCL includes core skills and qualities and distills them into a single framework designed to cultivate leadership behaviors that promote engagement and professional fulfillment.

The three elements are:

1)      care about people always;
2)      cultivate individual and team relationships;
3)      inspire change.

If cultivated, WCL can empower individual and team performance to address the current climate, learn, plan and prepare to address challenges that may arise in the future.
