We have come this far and we are almost there! June has begun and we are now in the final stretch of the 2022-2023 school year! Once the hurdles of scheduling, graduations and end-of-year field trips have been completed, all are hoped to have a well and much deserved break from the demands of our classrooms and offices.

Food for thought as you may have some downtime to slow down and think about what’s to come:

- Look forward to our in-person conference in October!
- Peruse the OSCA/ACOSO website!
   - Consider becoming a member of our Board of Directors
   - Reflect on your colleagues and the role they’ve played in Guidance and Careers Studies in consideration of the many Teacher Awards of recognition

Most of all, relax and enjoy your time away from rigorous routines! Happy Summer!

OSCA subscriptions are now open for renewal on the OSCA website. If you plan to renew your individual subscription, please check with your board lead first to see if your board will be purchasing subscriptions for 2023-2023. Please note, that once an individual pays for their individual subscription, there are no refunds. Board leads are encouraged to renew their board subscriptions at this time as well. Once a board lead pays on the website, a receipt will be automatically generated back containing the payment code that can be shared with board colleagues renewing. Remember that the person paying with the credit card, is known as the 'parent' and will be included in the number of subscriptions purchased. Thank you to those boards that have renewed thus far!  Any questions may be sent to oscadesk@gmail.com.

The books on your nightstand could be helping you become a better career practitioner. They may introduce you to new counselling strategies, methods for building relationships with employers or trends affecting the world of work. Like many other career practitioners, you probably have a copy of Richard N. Bolles’ What Colour is Your Parachute? or The Career Stories Method by Kerri Twigg on display in your workspace.

But I want to take a moment to give some love and recognition to the other types of books you may be reading. The books you read to escape into another world. The books, without you even knowing it, that may be improving your capacity for empathy, perception and even creativity on the job!

As we enter Pride month, you may be reflecting on how you can make your practice more inclusive for 2SLGBTQ clients. During this time, when many of you might be inviting guest speakers, revising workplace policies and demonstrating support, I encourage you to glance at your bookshelf. In this post, I share with you seven stories I think can strengthen your ability to understand and support 2SLGBTQ clients.

Keen to Help is on a mission to help students across Canada find volunteer opportunities to help with the professional development of the future generation of leaders in Canada. We know it can be hard for students to find opportunities that accept volunteers under the age of 18, which is why we have curated a database of close to 100 nonprofits in Ontario (primarily in Ottawa and the GTA) that request help from high school student volunteers. These nonprofits build profiles on our website that we periodically update and advertise to students in schools across the country. Students can browse and sign up to volunteer with these nonprofits directly on our website linked below:

 keentohelp.com/volunteer

We also work with schools who request an online volunteer portal for their school to add opportunities and curate a list of approved nonprofits for students to sign up with. Using this portal, we can also help facilitate the logging and verification of student volunteer hours (if needed). We have set this up for a few private schools in the GTA - should you be interested in learning more, you can contact:

Earth Rangers is introducing a new program called ER Teens. This project-based volunteer program enables teens aged 13-18, to make a difference in their local area and get involved in the environmental space.

When participating in the program, teens will connect with like-minded peers and network with professionals while building leadership skills like communication, problem-solving, and time management skills. They''ll be working with a mentor to design and lead an impactful environmental project in their community with the option to earn volunteer hours!

Registrations are currently being accepted for Summer 2023. Students can also learn more by going to the ER Teens website https://www.earthrangers.com/EN/CA/er-teens/

As career professionals, we support our clients by creating a compelling résumé. However, it’s important for all of us to maintain a constantly-evolving, living, "breathing" blueprint of our professional, academic, community, and volunteer activities and achievements. This is the living résumé. The living résumé is a valuable tool for every individual, even those who love their jobs and their employers. Who knows when a lucrative offer that cannot be refused may come along? A living résumé serves as a valuable and handy resource to help populate multiple customized résumés, biographies, blogs, career pages, job applications, and more.

Many happily-employed clients fail to maintain a living résumé because they don’t see the need. But then the unexpected happens; they’re transitioned out, offered a major promotion, or are headhunted for an appealing new job with a different company. The need suddenly arises for an up-to-date, targeted résumé. Many individuals forget exactly what they achieved during their college years, the awards or recognition they earned, the projects they led, or the milestones they were known for – including dates and statistics – unless these achievements and activities are tracked and recorded. There are several methods of keeping a living résumé and, if updated on a weekly basis, the task is not overwhelming and takes only minutes.
Career education across Canada varies based on provinces and territories. While curriculums differ in structure, they are all designed to help youth find success. Here is a breakdown of curriculum information for elementary and high school cohorts.

Now is the time to nominate a deserving colleague for an OSCA award. Perhaps it is that person who has created a great resource that has allowed students to create their own pathway? Maybe you know a guidance counsellor who is the ''go-to'' person at your school? Perhaps a deserving community partner that provides excellent support for your school?

You have until September 18, 2023 11:59 p.m. to nominate someone, but why not do it now?
