UHCO Alumna Wins Award for Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care

Dr. Megan Wagner, who graduated this May from the University of Houston, College of Optometry, was selected for a 2020 Johnson & Johnson Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care.

The awards, handed out by the American Academy of Optometry Foundation, recognize outstanding fourth-year student clinicians who have demonstrated excellent overall knowledge of the contact lens field and skillful, considerate and professional care of contact lens patients during their optometric education.

As a UHCO optometry student, Wagner completed externships at Bellaire Family Eye Care in Bellaire and the Cedar Springs Eye Clinic in Dallas. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Texas A&M University before pursuing her optometric studies.

Wagner shared some advice for aspiring optometrists. “Take the time to understand the ‘how and why’ behind what you are learning,” she wrote in an email. “You will thank yourself in the long run for not just memorizing things because you had to.”

Each of this year’s 24 recipients will receive $500 and a personalized plaque commemorating their accomplishment.
