Congratulations to Ralph Herring, OD, '81, and Nicole A. Karson, OPT III, OD/MS, on their honors at the 2019 American Public Health Association (APHA) conference. Dr. Herring received the APHA - VCS Distinguished Service Award, and Nicole received the Morton W. Silverman Paper/Project Award.

The Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor the Vision Care Section can bestow and is presented to a person, institution or group who has made an outstanding contribution or demonstrated continual high-quality service in the area of public health eye/vision care.

The Morton W. Silverman Outstanding Student-Paper Award was established to recognize a student or group of students what has contributed to the advancement of eye/vision care in the public health field from the perspective of a student in optometry, medicine, public health or related health professions program during their professional training.

The APHA Vision Care Section is proud to celebrate 40 years in existence this year! Since 1979, the VCS has been an advocate for equality in and access to vision and eye health care. By working alongside other health disciplines, the VCS helps keep vision and eye health at the forefront of healthy advancement for the good of everyone.
