The Eye Institute of Salus University’s School Vision Programs Continue to Make an Impact

For many years, The Eye Institute (TEI) has provided vision care services to economically disadvantaged children in Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs. Starting in September and continuing through the school year, vision care teams from TEI work collaboratively with school nurses to assist them in providing state-mandated vision screenings to their children. Any child who fails the screening is then transported to one of TEI’s three locations for a comprehensive eye exam. Children who need eyeglasses then receive two pairs - one for home and one for school.

Funding for the program comes from the University’s “Looking Out for Kids” (LOFK) initiative and charity fundraiser, which launched in 2007. The charity funds all glasses provided to the students, along with transportation for the Philadelphia school children to TEI in addition to the mobile unit/vision van. Since 2010, over 21,800 children have been screened through the LOFK initiative.

This year’s fundraiser will be held Saturday, November 2 at the Hilton Philadelphia City Avenue Hotel. Donations can also be made any time of the year online.
