Reflections
After 52 years in association management, 47 of those years as CEO, on Aug. 31, I gave up my CEO position with the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) and its two related entities, the Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health and International Board for Certification of Group Psychotherapists. Succession planning has been on my mind for a number of years and I have been preparing internally for it with strengthening membership and executive leadership, organization of historical records, digitizing office files, documenting policies and procedure and more.
Meet NY Spotlight
For many, Meet NY 2020 was the last in-person event before the pandemic and last Thursday’s Meet NY 2021 represented the return to in-person events. Hospitality partners and planners came from all over to the newly renovated Marriott Marquis for an afternoon and evening filled with education, entertainment and networking. What does that look like? Let’s get into the numbers. Synergy Awards
The 2021 Synergy Awards is your chance to celebrate the successes of the association community over the past year. We have an incredible slate of honorees ranging from Joe Benincasa, President & CEO of the Actors Fund, to Melva Miller, CEO of ABNY, to NYC & Company and the New York State Restaurant Association. The event will be an in-person breakfast held at the fabulous Current at Chelsea Piers from 9-10:30 a.m. on Oct. 29. Registration will open an hour early to ensure that there will be an appropriate amount of time for networking and catching up with colleagues. Want to extend your support past in-person attendance? Ask the Expert
Q: I love my board, but a few members consistently bring up old issues that have been previously discussed and concluded or interject new matters not on the agenda. How do you recommend addressing the concerns of these members without derailing the board meeting? A: No matter what size your board, there is usually a member or two who have their own concerns which they frequently express, oftentimes disrupting or derailing an already packed official agenda. What I always recommend in these situations is to make sure that your official board agenda is clear, concise, and perhaps most importantly, circulated well before the board meeting so that all members have ample time to prepare for the topics up for discussion.
