Message from the Board

We just completed the Board of Directors nominations process and I am bursting with excitement. Here’s why.

Many of you know my history with NYSAE. I was a very active member for many years, then was elected to the Board for a few years before becoming NYSAE CEO at Kellen headquarters. I was around as a committee chair and board member when it was often a challenge to not only get a member to volunteer for committee work, but to get them to magically appear and commit to applying for a board position.

Q. We’re a small professional society and we haven’t changed our Association Management Software in close to 10 years. We’re hoping to redesign our website this year and I’m thinking now is the time to make an AMS change at the same time. Our team receives so many complaints about our website navigation, especially with our conference registration and member directory. I know we won’t be able to afford another change in at least 5 years, so how can I be certain I’m recommending the right AMS to our Board
News for New York Associations
Rhonda Payne, CAE, has accepted an appointment as Chief Operating Officer of /dev/color, a nonprofit member services organization widely recognized as the most powerful network of Black software engineers in tech. Ms. Payne brings deep expertise in leading nonprofits, membership communities, events, teams, and large-scale verticals (both US-based and globally) into the role.

"Software engineers impact more than their company's valuation," Ms. Payne said. "They touch and shape millions of lives through their work. They impact the world. Yet, Black engineers, technologists, leaders and founders are being excluded and that loss hurts us all. Right now, people are struggling to discern theater from meaningful progress. I'm proud to align my efforts and passion for justice with such an important mission."

The Center for Fiction announced that Traci Lester has been named Executive Director of the organization. Ms. Lester joins The Center for Fiction from National Dance Institute, where she served as Executive Director from 2016 until March of this year. Ms. Lester succeeds Interim Executive Director Michael Roberts who assumed the role last June after the retirement of longtime Director Noreen Tomassi. Ms. Lester was selected after an extensive national search and began the role on April 6, 2021.

The Center for Fiction, marking its 200th anniversary, is the only organization solely devoted to the promotion and support of the art of fiction. Now located in downtown Brooklyn, it serves as a vibrant home for diverse readers and writers of all ages to convene, create, and connect over a shared love of literature. More here.
Association Headquarters, Inc. (AH) is ecstatic to announce that it has been awarded a 2021 Top Workplaces honor by the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Top Workplaces award is based solely on employee feedback through a third-party survey administered by employee engagement technology partner Energage LLC. The anonymous survey uniquely measures 15 culture drivers that are critical to the success of any organization including alignment, execution, and connection.
The Actors Fund has communicated that Steve Kalafer passed away this month. During Steve’s tenure on the Board, he served as Treasurer and on several committees and task forces. He produced an Oscar-nominated documentary about The Actors Fund Home and led the Sunshine Boys campaign to fund additional renovations to the residence. A Medal of Honor recipient, Steve also co-led the Chairman’s Council. Steve kept a coin in his pocket which read “be kind, be fair, work hard, earn money, do good,” and he lived by these words. He was a successful business leader who also built a baseball stadium for New Jersey’s Somerset Patriots, now a AA Yankee Affiliate. His close friend and former Yankee manager Joe Torre described Steve as a “force of nature, all for the good.” The Yankees recently paid tribute to Steve, and the family has asked that donations in his memory be made to the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, Somerset Healthcare and The Actors Fund.
