Message from the Board

Can you believe it? This time last year I moved out of NYSAE headquarters at Kellen on Lexington Avenue and into my home office on Long Island. To think how just two weeks earlier we were at the Marriott Marquis with over 500 association and hospitality execs for Meet New York, followed by an amazing evening at the Lunt-Fontane Theater for Tina, the Tina Turner Musical. Then it was March and NYSAE had just completed its public affairs workshop with Venable in the Building Trade Employers’ Association’s (BTEA) conference room. I recall the details like it was yesterday. We knew very little about the coronavirus, and I remember the NYSAE attendees were fist-bumping and elbow-bumping instead of shaking hands. No one could have predicted what would happen next.

Over the past year especially, nonprofits, foundations and associations have had to reinvent who they are, what value they bring, and how they choose to communicate with their communities.  Sarah Durham, Founder and CEO of Big Duck, defines nonprofit communications as “the practice of creating and sustaining mindshare and engagement that advances the mission.” She helps organizations determine their communications style.

The roots of the American Thoracic Society reach back to 1905, when a small group of physicians decided that the best way to improve care for tuberculosis patients was to share their experiences and discoveries. Question: I’m finding it hard to juggle all my tasks, especially in a remote environment. It seems that 15-minute tasks pop up throughout the day and my long-term projects get pushed to the back burner. What are some tips to help me stay organized, and to help my team stay organized, when on a project?

The not-for-profit aims to address the staggering loss of women in the workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic.

New York Women in Communications has launched #WomenHeard, a research-driven initiative meant to address the alarming rate of women departing from the workforce in the last year. According to a recent study conducted by the National Women’s Law Center, 80% of all workers over the age of 20 who left the workforce in January of 2021 were women. Women of color have also been disproportionately impacted by job loss. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Unemployment Data, the jobless rate for Black women aged 20 and over is 25% higher than the national average of all American women in that same age group. For Hispanic and Latina women, the rate is almost 50% higher.
ASAE Corner
We invite you to join us virtually on March 25-26 for American Associations Day, the only legislative fly-in for association professionals. In December, Congress expanded the flagship Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to thousands of 501(c)(6) organizations, providing them collective access to tens of billions of dollars in critically needed financial relief. As Congress continues to address the economic impact surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, associations need to be at the table. At just $39 for ASAE members, American Associations Day will include two days of engaging content worth 4.5 CAE credit hours. Congress now has a stronger understanding of the power of associations, and we need your help to build on that success. Click here to register today.
