Dear valued members, The world looks much different today than when we updated you in December on NYSAE activities. Member News
Mark your calendar for 1PM Eastern Time on Thursday, June 11th, when NYSAE will hold its first-ever virtual Annual Meeting via Zoom. “NYSAE’s Annual Meetings were typically a luncheon,” said Holly Koenig, NYSAE’s CEO. “We’re encouraging everyone to link in 15 minutes early for networking and to bring their lunch with a glass of wine to the screen!” NYSAE’s Chairman, Charles Riotto, will address the state of NYSAE. He will review accomplishments of the past year, acknowledge outgoing Board Members, welcome the 2020-2021 Board of Directors and recognize NYSAE’s outstanding volunteers. Register here to attend.
Member Spotlight
Why did you choose the field of association management and what about it keeps you going? I first went into the field of Association Management because it seemed exciting and multifaceted. My first position, Communications Director for the Mechanical Contractors Association of New York, involved quite a bit of travel and I did not want a regular 9-5 desk job. I love interacting with people and solving problems. I find that the members I serve are all passionate about their work. Their passion is contagious. It is rewarding to work with a Board and a membership to help improve an industry.

Q: Our organization is scheduled to have our Annual Meeting soon and we’re looking to take it virtual. The bylaws does not allow for virtual annual meetings. I saw that Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order suspended relevant sections of the Business Corporation Law to allow virtual shareholder meetings, but I have not seen similar for NY NFP Corps. Is there anything from the state about a NFP’s ability to hold a virtual Annual Meeting?
Hospitality Corner
NYSAE typically reports from the perspective of the association headquarters staff. For this ongoing series we reached out to elected volunteer presidents who lead the board of directors and serves from an association headquarters in New York City. Emma Guest-Consales, Ph.D., is President of the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC) What is GANYC? Founded in 1974 by licensed tour guides, the Guides' Association of New York City (GANYC) is an association of independent, professional tour guides. Each member is licensed by the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs. Although based in NYC, GANYC is one of the oldest and most active tour guides associations in America. We provide services for the visiting public as well as for our members including tour guide education, familiarization tours (FAM Tours), professional development programs, and guide certification.
News for New York Associations
The Toy Association ranked No. 23 on the overall list, which distinguishes the top 50 nonprofits in the U.S. based on surveys with employees, managers, and outside vendors of participating organizations. The Toy Association received top scores across The Nonprofit Times’ eight criteria: leadership and planning; culture and communications; role satisfaction; work environment; relationship with supervisor; training, development, and resources; pay and benefits; and overall engagement.
We are saddened to hear that past president of the New York State Bar Association Henry Miller, like so many New Yorkers, lost his life to the coronavirus. Henry was a brilliant advocate, a larger-than-life personality and a giant in the profession. For decades he was one of the state’s preeminent trial lawyers, and as a teacher he shared those skills with generations of lawyers. He was gentle and kind and patient. He will be truly missed.
