1. Why did you choose the field of association management and what about it keeps you going?

I first went into the field of Association Management because it seemed exciting and multifaceted. My first position, Communications Director for the Mechanical Contractors Association of New York, involved quite a bit of travel and I did not want a regular 9-5 desk job.  I love interacting with people and solving problems.  I find that the members I serve are all passionate about their work.  Their passion is contagious.  It is rewarding to work with a Board and a membership to help improve an industry.

2. Which aspect of your career do you consider to be your biggest struggle?

Managing priorities can be a struggle.  In a small association, you have to take on many roles.  Often you must simultaneously manage your internal responsibilities (finances, administrative issues) as you externally respond to the evolving needs of your membership.

3. What advice do you have for aspiring professionals looking to pursue a career in association management?

Be open-minded! You may find yourself involved with an industry that you never could have imagined.  Make an effort to connect with as many people as you can.  The Association world is filled with people willing to share ideas and help each other out but you must be someone who is willing to take initiative.  Once you get your foot in the door, take every opportunity to learn and grow.

4. If you could pick a personal anthem, what would it be?

Be honest, Do your best!  I have definitely made mistakes during my tenure but I have found that a willingness to be honest, admit mistakes and learn from them is invaluable.  The members I serve know that I consistently strive to do my absolute best for them.
