The New York City Bar Association mourns the passing of Bettina B. Plevan, who served as City Bar President from 2004-2006. Betsy Plevan, as she was known to friends and colleagues, was the second woman to serve as City Bar President. She had joined the City Bar and served on her first committee — State Courts of Superior Jurisdiction — in 1975, not long after graduating from law school. Under Ms. Plevan’s leadership, the City Bar made significant advances in the areas of diversity and pro bono. This included the founding of the City Bar's Office for Diversity and Inclusion, thought to be the first of its kind among bar associations in the country, and which drew over 100 signatories to its Statement of Diversity Principles in its first year.
