The window to accept speaker proposals for the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020 Education Sessions is Thursday, November 15. Once again, there will be a specific concrete track. The general audience is contractors looking for immediately applicable information. Sessions also attract mid-level operations and production staff. Submittals must be made using the online call for proposals link. Accepted speakers will be notified by mid-March 2019.

Jeremy Gregory, executive director of the Concrete Sustainability Hub at MIT, was one of a number of contributors to a recent article on the Mother Jones Web site on how to better confront the next Florence. "“It’s like when you buy a car and see that label about fuel economy. We need a similar thing for buildings,” he wrote.

"The key thing is building structures that are not just designed to withstand normal weather events, but built to last longer and withstand more extreme events. Part of the challenge with that is a lot of structures built a long time ago aren’t adequately prepared to sustain the increasing severity of storms," Gregory wrote. "We’re not even talking about entirely rebuilding structures. Sometimes it’s just about making sure that homes have a good connection between the roof and the walls and that you have protection for windows and doors. Because after the wind breaks that pressure seal, then a lot of the damage comes from the water."

Dramatic changes have been made in U.S. building codes over the past several years allowing combustible construction to be built bigger and taller. As we witness an exponential increase in multifamily apartment fires the past few years, the most egregious of these code changes is the proposed new class of wood high-rises. Without significant input from the fire services, code officials relied on work performed by the wood industry to justify the increased risk in building with a combustible material. This session will explore the real concerns to architects, engineers, developers, contractors and fire service professionals with tall timber construction. We will also explore resilient solutions and policies that the fire service can actively engage in reducing many of the safety and economic burdens that these potential fire disasters can cause to the community

Register for Mass Timber, Tall Tinder on Friday, October 12, at 1 p.m. Eastern time or here for October 18, at 1 p.m. Easter time. These Webinars will be lead by NRMCA's Tien Peng. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the Webinar.

Please join the North American Concrete Alliance (NACA) for a Webinar titled “NACA: 2018 Election Debrief” on Wednesday, November 7, starting at 2 p.m. Eastern time. This Webinar will serve as an overview of the available election results, what this means for NACA’s members and how this will impact the next Congress. Midterm elections are historically tumultuous and 2018 is promising to be especially so. With a pro-business majority on the line, the results of the election will be impactful to the ready mixed concrete industry.

NRMCA is leading an industry effort to urge member companies to sign the Pledge to America’s workers. This summer, President Trump signed an Executive Order establishing the National Council for the American Worker and the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board to create policies that rely on joint efforts among the federal government, private employers, educational institutions, labor unions and non-profit organizations, and work with federal agencies for consistent implementation. The White House is seeking to engage NRMCA’s members and encourage them to sign the Pledge to America’s Workers, committing to training and retraining our workforce. Developing an educated and skilled workforce is a high priority for the ready mixed concrete industry and one that NRMCA focuses on regularly.

To show your support, please sign the Pledge to America’s Workers here and return it to Andrew Tyrrell at atyrrell@nrmca.org.
