NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche, along with Antara Chaudry of the Northwest Cement Council recently presented Business Case for ICF Construction to Green Canopy Node. With offices in Seattle and Portland, OR, Green Canopy Node is a developer, contractor, engineering and architectural firm with a mission to build homes, relationships and businesses that help regenerate communities and environments. Presenting in-person in Seattle and via webinar to the Portland offices enabled Build With Strength the opportunity to review a real world project. After completing a Design Assistance Proposal (DAP), NRMCA provided a cost comparison that demonstrated a 10% reduction in construction costs along with an estimated increase in energy efficiency of up to 40%.

Utilizing information provided by NRMCA Producer members in Washington State, Matsche was able to show that a concrete structure, through the use of low carbon concrete mix designs, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions up to 80% or the equivalent of removing 15 passenger vehicles from the roadways. Daniel McCune, a construction project manager, attended the recent Low Carbon Concrete Symposium held in Oregon.

NRMCA recently verified three system-level Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for NRMCA Producer members O&G Industries and Dickinson Ready Mix, and non-member ready mix producer Arizona Materials.

For Producer member O&G Industries, underlying life cycle data for each plant and EPD were reviewed and verified by Ecoform, a verifier in NRMCA’s EPD program. The EPD was developed in consultation with and based on a software tool by Climate Earth. The software tool integrates LCA impacts within batch operating software to generate EPDs when desired. The software was reviewed and verified by Industrial Ecology Consultants. Public access to the EPD is available on the NRMCA EPD webpage and is listed as NRMCA EPD: 20073 O & G Industries. This EPD reports the impacts for ready mixed concrete from two plants in Connecticut.

Registration has just opened for both 2023 Effective Supervisor workshops; the first class will be in Los Angeles, April 18 - 20 and the second in Charlotte, NC, November 7 - 9. Why should your frontline supervisors attend? Those who understand their own strengths, weaknesses, biases and working styles are better equipped to influence and interact effectively with their team – and colleagues – who can have different working styles and personalities. As a result, the content includes industry-specific, hands-on situational exercises that develop solid communication skills and team building know-how, and use conflict resolution procedures.

This is a required workshop for those working on their STEPS Operations and Production Certification.

Business Advancement

The third class in NRMCA's sales certification series, Fundamentals of RMC Accounting, Finance, and Business Law: CCSP Module III, Business Knowledge, will be held February 14 - 16, 2023 in Dallas; it is now half full. Attendees learn how to use break-even analysis and cash flow in pricing considerations as well as become exposed to the fundamentals of contract law, collections and antitrust regulation. Each topic is critical to a producer to assure sales staff sell every cubic yard profitably.

Please note that this class is only held once each year. CCSP III is a required class in the STEPS Sales and Promotion program. The curriculum stands alone; attendees do not have to attend CCSP I or II before taking CCSP III.

The NRMCA RES Committee has completed two more topics in the Technology in Practice (TIP) series that are developed as educational resources for QC and tech service personnel.

  • TIP 23 outlines the process of establishing required average values of any specified property for concrete mixtures to ensure compliance with acceptance criteria.
  • TIP 24 discusses the permeability property of concrete, when low permeability is required, test methods, and developing mixtures for low permeability.

Click here for these two newest topics along with all TIP offerings. For more information, contact Colin Lobo at clobo@nrmca.org.
