As a leading Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Program Operator for the concrete industry, NRMCA recently verified a system level Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program for Producer member CalPortland Company. NRMCA verified various mix designs from nine plants in the Washington state market. With this new EPD, CalPortland becomes the first ready mixed concrete producer to verify EPDs to the new Product Category Rule (PCR) and continues to be a leader when responding to sustainable design market criteria.

The EPD was developed based on a software tool developed by Athena Sustainable Materials Institute. Athena’s Ready Mixed Concrete EPD Calculator is a web-based tool for instant, custom environmental footprint data on ready mixed concrete products. The EPD Calculator generates results that can be used to complete EPDs. The software tool integrates LCA impacts with mix design criteria to generate EPDs when desired. The software and underlying life cycle data for each plant was reviewed by Sustainable Solutions Corporation, a verifier in NRMCA’s EPD program.

From this point forward, CalPortland can generate EPDs on-demand from each of its nine plants using the Athena tool. CalPortland EPD's public listing can be found here. CalPortland also has other verified EPDs for Oregon and California ready mixed concrete plants.

To date, the North American ready mixed concrete industry, including material suppliers, have 45 company-specific verified EPDs with a total of 18,415 mixes, by far the largest total of any building product category.

As part of the Build With Strength campaign, NRMCA promotes Strength Through Transparency for member and industry competitiveness in the green building marketplace and the trends toward product and company transparency.

The NRMCA Pervious Concrete Promotion Subcommittee will hold a conference call on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at 3 p.m. Eastern time. The call-in number is 866-670-0780 and the conference code is 9101734. All interested NRMCA members are invited to participate. For more information, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org.

NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Luke McHugh recently presented Concrete Pavements for Parking Lots and highlighted NRMCA’s Design Assistance Program at the Illinois Concrete Focus Group Meeting in McCook, IL, sponsored by the Illinois Ready Mixed Concrete Association. The presentation focused on correctly using ACI 330 to design, construct and maintain concrete parking lot pavements, since most Illinois engineers currently use IDOT’s Bureau of Design and Environmental Manual, Chapter 54 Pavement Design which specifically states NOT to use it to design parking lot pavements. Over 60 owners, developers, engineers, contractors and NRMCA members attended the one day event.

For more information, contact Luke McHugh at 267-212-4700 or lmchugh@nrmca.org.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host a free Webinar on Wednesday, July 24, at 2 p.m. Eastern time aimed at improving energy efficiencies across various aspects of a ready mixed concrete facility by managing energy data, maximizing fleet operations and increasing employee engagement through recognition. Hear how your peers from NRMCA Producer members CEMEX, CalPortland and Ozinga have accomplished this while being recognized for their efforts by EPA's ENERGY STAR program as industry leaders in energy and environmental sustainability. Learn from these companies how you can use resources and tools from ENERGY STAR to help manage and save energy to improve your facility's bottom line.

Business Advancement

We are still short of last year’s participation rate for the annual driver survey. And so far, 56% of producers, the highest number in five years, report they walked away from business because they did not have a driver to deliver the order. In our very tight labor market, please allow NRMCA to share industry-specific data to support your decisions about your largest job segment: mixer drivers. We request that the appropriate person on your staff gather your driver employment data and fill out the anonymous survey. We will run your calculations – we just need your numbers. There are 30 questions; approximate estimate to fill out the form is only 12 minutes. Thanks in advance!

The survey closes this Friday, June 28. For more information, contact Eileen Dickson at edickson@nrmca.org.
