As a leading Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Program Operator for the concrete industry, NRMCA recently verified a system level Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program for Producer member CalPortland Company. NRMCA verified various mix designs from nine plants in the Washington state market. With this new EPD, CalPortland becomes the first ready mixed concrete producer to verify EPDs to the new Product Category Rule (PCR) and continues to be a leader when responding to sustainable design market criteria.

The EPD was developed based on a software tool developed by Athena Sustainable Materials Institute. Athena’s Ready Mixed Concrete EPD Calculator is a web-based tool for instant, custom environmental footprint data on ready mixed concrete products. The EPD Calculator generates results that can be used to complete EPDs. The software tool integrates LCA impacts with mix design criteria to generate EPDs when desired. The software and underlying life cycle data for each plant was reviewed by Sustainable Solutions Corporation, a verifier in NRMCA’s EPD program.

From this point forward, CalPortland can generate EPDs on-demand from each of its nine plants using the Athena tool. CalPortland EPD's public listing can be found here. CalPortland also has other verified EPDs for Oregon and California ready mixed concrete plants.

To date, the North American ready mixed concrete industry, including material suppliers, have 45 company-specific verified EPDs with a total of 18,415 mixes, by far the largest total of any building product category.

As part of the Build With Strength campaign, NRMCA promotes Strength Through Transparency for member and industry competitiveness in the green building marketplace and the trends toward product and company transparency.
