Association & Industry News

Thanks to tremendous industry support, the RMC Research & Education Foundation has have achieved its goal of raising $9 million in matching commitments in just 2.5 years. Achieving the match goal will allow it to fully leverage the $3 million gift pledged by the Troesh Family Foundation. The Foundation is now within striking distance of becoming the lasting resource for industry research and education it has long envisioned.

Special thanks goes to Command Alkon for launching an additional $100K match challenge at the end of the campaign, adding to its previous support. Command Alkon’s challenge was met by a number of companies, associations and individuals, including Ernst Concrete which put the Foundation over the top by adding another $100K to total contributions. The Foundation thanks all supporters, past and present, for helping it accomplish this monumental goal. See a full contributors list here.

Please enjoy the holiday newsletter, which highlights 2018 progress and successes. The Foundation remains grateful for your continuing support and wishes you and your families a wonderful holiday season and prosperous 2019.

Buildings
After a record-breaking wildfire season, California’s Camp Fire destroyed the town of Paradise and left a burn scar that encompassed over 150,000 acres. That fire became the deadliest fire in California's history after it killed at least 85 people. The blaze has destroyed nearly 19,000 buildings, more structures than the state's other seven worst wildfires combined. Today, one-third of all U.S. homes are in the wildland-urban interface, the area where flammable vegetation and homes meet or intermingle.

Pavement

A year ago, Jon Hansen, NRMCA senior vice president, local paving, spoke to the local chapter of the Springfield, MO, Home Builders Association. The presentation proved to be so popular that Hansen was invited back by Tom Baird of NRMCA Producer member Conco Companies in Springfield for another presentation that took place in October. This year’s topic centered around concrete basics with an emphasis on cold weather concrete practices. An audience of 30 attendees consisting of home building contractors, engineering firms and ready mix producers attended the 2-hour seminar. Attendees found the information so useful that they want to do additional seminars “in the dead of winter” when they can bring their concrete subcontractors to a similar meeting, Hansen reported.

For more information on presenting to your local chapter of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), contact Jon Hansen at jhansen@nrmca.org.

Business Advancement

With mixer driver hiring and retention of paramount importance, it is critical that ready mixed concrete front-line supervisors understand the scope and tasks they are expected to execute. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the most common business lawsuit filed is by employees against their employers - and the employees cite their direct supervisor as the cause. Therefore, the class content supports plant, operations dispatch, fleet and driver managers and supervisors as well as QC supervisors. Content includes industry-specific, hands-on exercises to develop solid procedures to increase efficiency and profitability using better communication skills with front-line employees.

The class is held just once a year; this class is now two-thirds filled. Dates are January 22-24 in Kissimmee (metro-Orlando), FL. Click here for registration options and staff contact and use the fee as a 2018 expense.

The third class in NRMCA's sales certification series, Fundamentals of RMC Accounting, Finance, and Business Law: CCSP Module III, Business Knowledge, will be held January 15-17, 2019 in Silver Spring, MD. Class content shows how to use break-even analysis, fundamentals, cash flow, fundamentals of contract law, collections and antitrust regulation. Each is critical to a producer to assure sales staff sell every cubic yard profitably. The class only runs once a year.

CCSP III is a required class in the STEPS Sales and Promotion program. The curriculum stands alone; attendees do not have to attend CCSP I or II before taking CCSP III.
