Engineering
NRMCA Vice President, Research and Technical Services, Glenn Schaefer has been awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Advanced Concrete Technology from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. The degree is a one-of-a-kind, internationally respected program and widely regarded as one of the highest-level qualifications available to concrete professionals. Schaefer went through the program remotely. The program blends advanced chemistry of cementitious materials, materials science, durability engineering, mix design optimization and sustainable construction practices. Its curriculum integrates intensive academic research with complex industry problem-solving, preparing graduates to lead technical innovation and shape the future of the global concrete community. Schaefer’s thesis, A Systematic Review of Alternative Cements: Advancements, Challenges and Future Prospectives for Sustainable Concrete Construction, provides a comprehensive overview of emerging cement technologies. His work highlights key opportunities and barriers associated with scaling alternative cements and offers guidance for transitioning toward more sustainable, lower-emission concrete systems. NRMCA congratulates Glenn Schaefer on his accomplishment and celebrates the expertise and leadership he continues to bring to advancing concrete technology across the industry. Pavement
For the better part of a week, John Lee, Cemstone director of sustainability and business development, joined NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Luke McHugh in touring the Minneapolis region, educating engineers on how concrete pavements can be cost competitive when properly designed using the www.Pavementdesigner.org concrete pavement design program which MNDOT has approved for local road applications. McHugh and Lee also scheduled time to meet with local concrete paving contractors, highlighting the NRMCA Design Assistance program that can provide them with equivalent concrete pavement solutions as an alternative to asphalt. For more information, contact Luke McHugh at lmchugh@nrmca.org. Calendar
