NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Brandon Wray recently partnered with the US Green Building Council’s California chapter, in conjunction with the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California, to host a roundtable event titled Carbon Forward: SoCal Sustainable Building Forum. The event took place at Epson America’s Los Alamitos campus as an immersive experience focused on the future of sustainable construction. Attendees were provided insights into California’s evolving embodied-carbon regulations and the state of low-carbon materials. To better engage stakeholders, attendees participated in rotating interactive workshops and roundtable discussions led by industry leaders. Wray (seen here addressing attendees) led a series of sessions titled The Impacts of Performance Specifications on Concrete in which designers and contractors explored how prescriptive specifications negatively impact cost and carbon. Ultimately, these in-depth explorations emphasized the importance of performance-focused specifications in achieving efficiency that translates into project success. The collaborative atmosphere successfully ignited new ideas and provided practical strategies for professionals to immediately apply to their next projects throughout the country. For questions regarding the event or promotion efforts in California, contact Brandon Wray at bwray@nrmca.org.

Recently, NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Amanda Hult joined the Tennessee Concrete Association’s Alan Sparkman as he presented Reducing Concrete’s Carbon Footprint to a group of Vanderbilt University civil engineering students. Sparkman (seen here addressing students) provided valuable information to the students on material selection, EPD's and proper design, and engaged the students with questions on their perception of concrete as a sustainable building material. NRMCA continues to discuss concrete buildings and pavements with students attending colleges and universities. If you have a contact within engineering or architecture schools at a local college or university, please reach out to your Local Paving or Build With Strength contact to discuss an opportunity.
