The American Coal Ash Association (ACAA) has released the results of its annual Coal Combustion Products (CCP) Production and Use Survey representing data for 2024. Production of new CCP declined from 66.7 million tons in 2023 to 63.6 million tons in 2024. The report indicates that 72 percent of the ash produced in 2024 was beneficially used in concrete and concrete products, up from 69 percent the prior year and marking the 10th consecutive year that more than half of the ash produced was used rather than disposed.
Fly ash used in concrete production increased from 11.9 million tons in 2023 to 14.6 million tons in 2024. These estimates are for “fresh” ash produced at utilities from coal combustion and does not include material being introduced in the market by the rapidly growing practice of harvesting material from legacy disposal sites. Results of harvesting coal combustion material in ponds and other disposal sites are expected next spring and will be used to update ash use metrics.
The 2024 and prior reports can be accessed from ACAA's Production and Use Reports.
