NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Luke McHugh and Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge, recently met with representatives from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in its offices in Alexandria, VA, to discuss WMATA’s concrete pavement specification.

The NRMCA Pave Ahead team had recently completed an initial review of WMATA’s current specification and design details. McHugh and Kresge explained the reasoning behind the proposed changes to the specification. Additionally, the engineers from WMATA had some specific questions regarding steel reinforcement and jointing; Kresge provided a copy of NRMCA’s FAQ: Concrete Parking Lot Design & Construction Specifications.

McHugh pointed out that there were several sections within the WMATA specification that referred to other documents or specifications, and that a proper review of the concrete pavement specification should include those other documents. WMATA agreed to provide the necessary files to complete the review process. It also offered to provide specifications for concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk.

WMATA currently uses concrete pavement for bus loops but may have a mix of concrete and asphalt pavement for other applications; it is updating and overhauling several of the loops. McHugh and Kresge introduced the possibility of including concrete overlays of existing asphalt pavement as part of that process. Kresge also introduced the possibility of utilizing Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) construction for the new garages included in the updates. WMATA expressed an interest and agreed to facilitate its structural design group into future discussions.
