NRMCA EPD Program Expands to Aggregate, Precast and CMU Block

In the first half of 2025, NRMCA has expanded its environmental product declaration (EPD) program to include three additional products related to ready mixed concrete: aggregates, precast concrete and concrete masonry units (CMUs). NRMCA can now verify and publish EPDs for each of these materials, in addition to ready mixed concrete and cement.
NRMCA has now published EPDs for one plant location for each newly included material:
- Chaney Enterprises (Christiansburg, VA, plant) - This EPD reports the impacts for CMUs from one plant in Christiansburg, VA. EPD number 20111; verified 2/20/2025.
- Thompson Pipe Group - This EPD reports the impacts for one metric ton of precast concrete from one plant in South Beloit, IL. EPD number 20204; verified 3/3/2025.
- North American Aggregates, a subsidiary of Weeks Marine - This EPD reports the impacts for fine aggregate from one plant in Perth Amboy, NJ. EPD number 20211; verified 5/15/2025.
The standards for EPD documents are governed by product category rules (PCRs), which are unique to each material type, in order to capture the nuances of the manufacturing process and materials, and the effects they have on each product's environmental impacts. NRMCA studied the PCRs for each newly included material and developed review checklists and procedures to evaluate the conformance of EPDs to each standard.
NRMCA's goal with this expansion in EPD scope is to support members' entire portfolio beyond ready mixed concrete and to leverage the growing industry expertise in ready mixed concrete EPDs for other materials. Many NRMCA Producer and Associate members produce multiple concrete and concrete-related products. EPDs are less widely used in the aggregate, precast concrete and CMU markets, making their availability a distinguishing factor for producers that can provide them.
EPDs are publicly available on the EPD webpage, listed by the EPD numbers above. For more information on the program, contact Manager, Codes and Sustainability Programs, Matthew Lemay at mlemay@nrmca.org.
