Vespa Mandarinia Has a New Name

Vespa mandarinia, the invasive hornet formerly referred to as the “Asian giant hornet” or the “murder hornet” has a new official common name. The Entomology Society of America (ESA) has adopted “northern giant hornet” for this species. Similarly, the Entomology of Society of Canada (ESC) has also approved “northern giant hornet” (and "frelon géant du nord" in French) for Vespa mandarinia. All future publications and scientific articles citing this species from ESA or ESC will adopt the new common name. Read more about the “northern giant hornet.”
