Past Chief James J. Kavanaugh passed away on May 8, 2023. He led the association as president from 1988-1989. A longtime member of the Erie County fire service, Kavanaugh was a life member of the East Seneca Fire Company, which he led as chief from 1971-1974, and the Vigilant Fire Company.

79 firefighters who died in 2022 and 65 who died in previous years were honored during the 2023 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend ceremonies held on May 6-7 in Emmitsburg, MD.
