Is this a frequent scene at the start of board meetings? The meeting is called to order and suddenly, nearly everyone at the table, even the board chair, is feverishly reading the agenda and reports – despite the fact that they were distributed days or weeks in advance. Perhaps you are the rare association management professional who has not experienced the frustration of well-meaning but unprepared board members. However, for everyone else, we offer the following to share with your board.

Congratulations! You’ve just finalized your organization’s succession plan, and that’s a notable accomplishment. According to an article published in 2015 by McKinsey, two-thirds of U.S. public and private companies do not have a formal succession plan. No doubt, many hours of leadership and administrative time have been invested to produce your succession plan. You can now move confidently forward, secure in the knowledge that you have a strategy to address future gaps in key leadership positions.

NE/SAE held its 2016 Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24 at the Mystic Marriott Hotel & Spa in Groton, Conn. Click here to view photos!

This year’s meeting featured exciting general sessions on transformational governance, how to read minds and influence people, and how to grow and engage young members. Attendees learned about a wide variety of topics during our breakout and SNAP sessions, including how to manage performance without annual performance reviews, how to utilize design thinking in association management, and how to build an effective hotel RFP, among many others.

Attendees also enjoyed a variety of opportunities to network with association professionals and industry partners – at the Thursday evening reception sponsored by the Mystic Marriot Hotel & Spa, the cornhole tournament organized by the Millennial Infusion Task Force, and the After-Hours Party hosted by the Hilton Mystic. Thank you to our sponsors who helped make this year's Annual Meeting a great success!

At the 2016 Annual Meeting in Connecticut last month, NE/SAE recognized the recipients of the Super Star Award and the Rising Star Award. Congratulations to our Super Star Award winner, David Fox, and our Rising Star Award winner, Luiza Pellerin!

Ray Raposa seemed an unlikely hire for the executive director of the New England Water Works Association back in 1986. He was the director of three junior college branch campuses and had no background in water, but the board latched onto his education skills. They also saw in him the potential to attract new members and bridge the gulf between young professionals and traditionalists who wanted to keep the status quo. Ray went on to become the longest-serving Section executive director in the American Water Works Association’s history, and NE/SAE is proud to extend Honorary Membership to him.

Congratulations to the newly-elected members of NE/SAE’s Board of Directors. We are excited to welcome such a strong team of volunteers to lead NE/SAE over the next year.

Our Board of Directors has been hard at work crafting a new strategic plan for NE/SAE. Over the next several years, NE/SAE will focus on key goals in the areas of education, communication and member engagement.
